Parts of it sound familiar - almost like 2 different fics. I think the one you're looking for is from hesadevil. I don't know the title, but I recall it wasn't finished. You could look for her on LJ or one of the archives. Don't remember where I read it, but it might have been on All About Spike.

The other one it reminded me of (Black Widow by bogwitch) is too different to be the one you're thinking of, although Buffy is a vampire killing machine, created by the Initiative guys who put a chip in her head that made her forget who she was.

Reminds me a bit of a piece where a sorceror causes Buffy to lose her soul, so as to turn her into a merc-for-hire. She accidentally kills Tara; Spike gets a chipectomy; and Willow almost kills Spike in a bit of tit-for-tat. At the conclusion, the sorceror decides to get some revenge, and raises the spirit of Nikki, if I recall correctly. I think the sorceror is from Southeast Asia. No Initiative, though.

LOL - Trust me, my memory normally sucks. I have a terrible time remembering titles and/or authors. My normal reply to questions about fics is "oh, I remember reading that! But I don't remember where it was or who wrote it, or.... and so on."  I've not read many fics by hesadevil, and I have met her (delightful person) at a UK WriterCon, so it stuck in my mind. You'll notice I have no clue what the title may be....  And the Black Widow is one I just recently saw somewhere and reread, so it stuck in my mind too.

Both sound interesting - hope I can find the Black Widow by bogwitch here or easily.  The other sounds really good but I have given up on reading WIP unless by currently active writers.
