Chapter #1 - Destiny

What was destiny? They were champions, their lives defined by pain, by loss. Their fates hijacked by powers that cared nothing for them. They were toys to be played with, to be broken.

They learned their lessons well. Everyone died. Everything ended. Fate was a fickle mistress who was no one’s friend.

*~*~*

Spike had always regretted not going to Buffy when he returned. He’d made his excuses. She was happy; she was living her normal life. She was free of him, of their pain. But that was all they were – excuses to keep his shattered heart safe.

He should have gone to her. It shouldn’t have ended, not like this.

The fight in the ally was glorious. Fists and fangs, demons all around; a glorious battle which was theirs to win. It was their destiny after all, they were champions.

Then Angel fell. He was alone at the end, no one to console him, no one to note his demise. Just a casual glance to where he was and then the absence hit him. No one noticed the dusting of one more champion.

Blue was glorious - she took out the masses, her grief inconsolable. Her power consumed the monsters, consumed her, and then left the last remaining champion of the fight dying. Her power had saved them all, but condemned him. No one could survive being that near a God’s fury and survive the damage.

Fate, destiny, champions; none of it mattered anymore.

He couldn’t go to her again. Once more he was dying. This was twice he had fallen in the line of duty. Twice he’d died to save the world. Only this time, not even Buffy would know. He would die alone.

Pain racked him. He hated being alone.

*~*~*

She felt him as he faded away. Knowing his fate, and not going to him; her heart broke. Why was it her destiny to be alone? Why was she trapped in Rome, fulfilling another ‘mission’, trying to foil the Immortal’s plans? Why was this her fate? To save the world but to lose everything she cared about. Why was she commanded to do this? Hijacked into a fate she did not want. Bullied by Powers she cared not about.

Destiny.

Her heart broken, she gave up. She now knew why Slayers fought alone. Why they died young. Her soul was shattered, yet she fought on. She wondered how long until it would take before she became someone’s one good day?

*~*~*

Destiny.

They came together; kissed, rejoiced. They couldn’t be separated; never again. They were fated, it was destiny.

In a world made safe by the sacrifice of champions, two souls returned.

They were destined.

Their souls entwined. They would meet again.

This time would be different.
