Thank you. I don't like them very much...

Great story - I liked how you balanced out the history from the series to your story.  I especially liked how you handled Giles and Xander - also nice touch with the Travers & General ending.  Always a pleasure reading your work.

Thank you. :)

I absolutely loved this story's classic style, a fic that picks up on slight hints on the show and brings them to the perfect conclusion is eactly my favourite thing.  You pulled it off with bells on!!
Thank you so much. It's amazing how a few little barely noticed or remembered events can be used to turn canon completely on its head. :)

Sweet! Of course, I'd love to see how poor Q.T. dealt with these two!!  The initiative is a villain that keeps on giving, isn't it?  hehe.

Heh, yep, it's always there when you need a villain. :) Thanks for reading.

Great update. Nice to see that Buffy hasn't lost her ability to piss Travers off. Although she usually does that just by existing.

LOL   That she does. But taking up with another vampire is probably really pushing his tolerance. :)

Definetly more kissing less talky Buffy! I am glad for Buffy and Giles that Spike didn't disappoint them. He could have killed Riley and he didn't. They had to be wondering whether the trust they placed in him would be a mistake. Glad to see it wasn't.
Well, not in this fic, anyway.... :)  He had a lot to proved, and less to seek vengeance for, in this fic than in some others set in this era. :)

10/27/2011 02:31 am
Eleven
You were right - the Break Up Talk with Riley was totally unnecessary.  I guess I had been thinking he was going to come right in the end. Instead he deliberately tried to get them all killed. More please....
Formatting a bit weird - when I hover my cursor over the text it kind of flashes underlined and overlined - never seen anything like it before....
Huh - don't have a clue. I'll have to check that out and ask Dia about it. Maybe because I use the "post directly from Word" option. No idea what that does to the text, but it's the only thing I can think of that could be affecting it.

Ahhh that was a trifle sad, Maggie Walsh has a lot to answer for. Hope she doesn't get off easy.

She does. That was not emphasized enough in canon - IMHO

Glad Buffy and the others got to see the real picture of what was happening down there rather than the 'prettied up' version we (and Buffy) got to see on the show. There's no way Maggie didn't order all sorts of nasty things to be done to the helpless demons under her control just to see what would happen.
*nods* I find it difficult not to point that out when I'm writing season 4 fics. I'm glad you agree with me. There was serious cruelity going on in there. They were hardly "the good guys".

10/26/2011 05:37 am
Ten
Finally some sympathy for those demons. Yeah they might have been evil but they never did anything like what those soul having humans did. Glad the gang could see the difference.
I find it hard not to get a dig in about the Initiative workers when I do season 4 fics. They were seriously challenged morally - and not just Maggie.

Well that went well, although we've still got the Scoobies reaction to come. It was a great idea for Spike to drop the 'heaven's own' line. I mean come on, she's got to be a lot closer to God than the Pope and think what a fuss they made of Joan of Arc. Now all we need is a host of Angels to swoop down and smite them all like in Indiana Jones. After all they are Nazis. Great update looking forward to more.

Thanks. I'm glad you liked it. I hope to get the next chapter up before I go to bed tonight.

Okay Giles and Buffy are okay with the chipless Spike but we all know Xander is going to freak. Unless Spike saves his life from some humans he wont ever trust him.
Aw... Spike and Xander rag on each other a lot, but they're capable of getting along... sometimes... under the right circumstances... if Buffy's watching... LOL

Glad Buffy didn't go all stake happy! Also glad you didn't make with the smut straight away, that would have been too fast - besides, technically she has to have the break up talk with Riley first! More please........ :-)
Um... technically, I think Riley trying to kidnap her friends and cold-cocking her watcher pretty much took care of any need for a breakup talk. If it didn't, Buffy's punching his lights out probaby got the message across pretty well. :)  But yeah, good on her for not staking first and asking questions later. :) Smut would have been inappropriate -  they've barely kissed and she's just found out that he loves her. Think she'll need some time to get used to the new relationship first, don't you? :)  Thanks so much for reading and commenting.

Lovely to see another update. I guess times running out for Spike. I'm hoping that Gile will be able to defuse the situation, but Buffy does have a tendency to act first and think later. Luckily Spike likes a bit of rough and tumble. Looking forward to more.

Yeah, he's about out of chances to 'fess up.  More soon. :)

Giles sent Spike somewhere to get the chip taken out didn't he? And to try to get Angel to help. But of course Angel wouldn't even talk to Spike and I bet if Spike mentioned Buffy all Angel would do is threaten Spike and not listen to what he had to say. For once I am hoping the Council shows up soon! I don't think Buffy is going to be happy about the chip removal even if it was Giles' idea. How in the world the two of them thought they were going to explain it to her is beyond me. She is going to be a tough sell but Xander will probably be an impossible sell.
I suspect Xander will be the last to know... :) And yeah, being as this is happening in Season Four and the last time Angel saw Spike he was having Angel tortured... probably not inclined to want to talk to him. :)

Oh dear, wonder how Buffy is going to react when Spike tells her about his chipectomy? Not sure about the wisdom of the scoobies going straight back to the crypt - they can't hide in the darkness because of the Initiative soldiers' heat sensing equipment. Loved the kiss! More please...
More soon.  I don't think the Initiative would go back and use heat-seeking stuff (not just yet, anyway) You'll see why soon. :)

Loved the update, very satisfying confrontation between Buffy and Riley. How he thought just he and Graham could handle Buffy is delusional. Great Anya ramble, although very similar to when Xander dropped Buffy in it with Riley. They both have a preoccupation with other peoples sex lives. Looking forward to more.

Thanks. Will try for another update tonight.

Evil cllff hanger!!

Riley manhandleing the scooby gang is going to get him into even more of a world of hurt than Buffy laid on him already. He is just lucky that Willow only threw a fireball at him. If he isn't careful Anya might get a friend or two (or even D'Hoffryn) to let her make a wish!
Yup - he's making some pretty scary enemies now. :)

Initiative.  Heebie-jeebies.  On the other hand, Buffy now has backup and isn't taking them on alone, so it becomes a lot less nerve-wracking for me.
Buffy and Spike together - the Initiative doesn't stand a chance. :)

I can see it now a bunch of frogs in camo outfits hopping around town!

Of course they wanted to experiment on her. She shows all the sign of being a demon without setting off their equipment. That was part of their goal, the strengths of demons that could move around freely. Plus if they could use part of her for Adam bonus points. Why she ever thought she was safe from them was a mystery to me. Walsh was even experimenting on her own soliders. So it was obvious that no life was sacred not even humans.
*nods* It really makes complete sense that Walsh would want to study her rather than have her killed right away.  Hee! frogs in cammo - that could be a fun cracky fic. :)

Ooh really exciting chapter, finally looks like the initiatives bitten off more than it can chew. I'm guessing Spikes gone off to do something about his chip. Wonder if the cavalry will include Angel and his gang. Looking forward to more. Super.

I think it was meant to, but Angel's pretty pissed off at Spike at this point in canon, so....

So Riley must have told Maggie about Giles. Pillock. Wonder what the Council is going to do - and wonder how Buffy is going to react to Spike's chipectomy which Giles has instigated. Can't wait...

You wonder how Buffy could be so naive about the initiative, then you remember how it actually went on the show. Got a bad feeling about her upcoming meeting with Maggie.

Yep - unthinking stupidity was pretty much it in canon, at least until Maggie tried to get Buffy killed...

I hate Initiative fics.  The only reference so far is to a bunch of humans acting like thugs, but something about the faceless unstoppable entity just gives me the heebie-jeebies.

Buffy tending to Spike makes it all okay, though.  :)

Sounds like the soldier boys are totally out of control, pretty much as they were in canon. Hope Spike gets a bit of payback.

*nods* Canon is pretty kind to the men who did the capturing so that their boss could mutilate and kill sentient beings. I'm usually not so kind to them.

10/19/2011 11:42 pm
Four
On the show she would have done exactly what she here insists she wouldn't. If he was all beat up and covered with multiple injuries and therefore unable to help, she'd just leave him to it with those immortal words from 'Spiral': "They'll heal".
I like your stickless arse Buffy
*nods* Buffy on the show was not a very caring person during later seasons.  In all fairness to show Buffy, though, "her" Spike didn't start helping her on a regular basis and didn't have that ongoin relationship with her watcher to make it seem more normal to have him around.

10/19/2011 11:16 pm
Four
Wow!! She helped him without thinking about it. I am amazed. Is Willow crushing on Spike a bit? Seems like it. Can't wait for the next chapter.
Yeah, this Buffy has had some time to get to know Spike under slightly different circumstances. Willow? Hmmmm don't think so, but I think she likes him.

How can Buffy even think of Riley when she's got Spike right in front of her? Duh... Maybe its all that hairspray.

Finally they are starting to see that there is more to Spike than meets the eye, well except Xander. But he is always a hard sell. I doubt Spike's little slip about tutoring before got past Willow, she is probably going to find out all about his past.

This is a great story so far I love it.  You never really get to see Buffy and Spike go dating, and I think this is the best way I've seen anyone broach the subject of Buffy seeing harmless demons.  I can't wait to see more of Buffy getting to know the Spike that he likes to hide.  Keep up the great work!

Love how easy Buffy & Spike are with each other - until Willow points it out and Buffy dives stright into that river in Egypt and upsets Spike...

It was a good idea taking Buffy to the non evil demon bar. Hopefully she'll start questioning the initiatives role in Sunnydale.

*nods* There's no reason to have waited until season six to teach Buffy about the demon world in Sunnydale. I prefer to believe it happened earlier.

Good to see the 'harmless' demons introduced a bit earlier and Spike making an efort to familiarise Buffy with them. Something I think he might have done if She and the scoobies in general had been even the slightest bit sympathetic and accepting instead of constantly putting him down and poking fun at him - except Willow who was occasionally sweet to him. Love the way Buffy is still wavering about her relationship with Riley - she really should have stuck to her guns in 'Doomed'. More pleqase.
More momentarily. Or, you know, soon anyway. :) I'm glad you're enjoying it.

Oh me like.... More please. ::bats eyelashes::  BTB - Have you ever written anything which wasn't perfection personified?  Really!  You can bring Spike n Buffy front and center without loosing the voice of the "gang."  I'm really loving Giles being more open n curious.  (This I know will lead too more good.)

Interesting.  A little fluffier and sweeter (something about judgmental self-righteous Buffy makes me feel like all is right with the universe), but within the context you laid out, they're all more or less in character.  I love your Giles voice.  I couldn't see Spike admitting his feelings for Buffy until I let it sink in that a lot of time had passed over the mens' chess sessions and conversations.

Nicely written.  You've gotten me curious.
I hope you enjoy the rest of it. :)

Chess - white always moves first which is an advantage.  Just in case 19 other people haven't already mentioned it.

Thanks - Always makes 99% of my banners. The advantage of having a beta who likes to play in photo shop. :)

Actually, no one has mentioned that anywhere! No chess players among my readers or on my LJ flist?  Thanks for telling me. I think before I put the fic up on my website I'll reference that knowledge or change it somehow...

I always regretted the way the writers threw away the growing camaraderie between Spike & Giles in mid season 4 - Giles had more acceptance and empathy for the newly chipped and defiantly evil vamp than he showed in season 5 once Spike began helping in earnest and attempted to become part of the team. I'm glad to see you're building on the foundations they scrapped. So much more believable. Good to see Spike accepting the attraction between Buffy & himself ealier too. Joss said he was loking for a believable way to bring Buffy & Spike together from early season 4. You've managed it much better than he did!
Thank you! *take that, Joss!* LOL  Yes, in addition to the few little things I'm using, there was much in season 4 that could have been built upon if anyone wanted to go in that direction. It wasn't necessary to keep Spike evil until he fell in love with Buffy - he could have, and probably would have, hung around just for the company.

Nice Start -  good to see that you are doing another new story - Hope you keep Giles and Spike on friendly terms, I always enjoy these two as more as able to work together and even becoming friends.  It's good to have Giles in a new story.  Makes he being killed off in official canon easier to deal with.

I plan to keep them friends. I've always thought they should be. Hope you enjoy the rest of it.
