Do you have an account waiting for activation?

Jan 30 2011 07:21 pm   #1Diabola
If you tried to create an account anytime after January 2010 and didn't get your activation email, please post the username and email-addy for that account so we can take care of it.

I've removed all failed attempts from before 2010, so if anyone from then is still around, please try registering a new account.

I think we'll keep this thread open until around May, after that all pre-2011 attempts will be removed.

So once that's all done, the queue should be short enough that a not activated account will be noticed quickly and you'll get some help right away.

Hey, Diabola,

I tried to register many times and every time I got a message that my account wasn't activated. I gave up  long ago - I resigned to reading other people's stories and forum posts. But today, after reading your post, I decided to try to log in - and succeeded! I don't know what happened - I'm 100% sure that I submitted my registration loooong before 2011.

Anyway, I'm here and I'm very happy to be able to post. You have an awesome place here.

Cool, one of your later tries was probably after January 2010 and ended up being one of the ones Slaymesoftly remembered and activated - she put quite a bit of time into going through them and filtering out the spam.

Have fun. :-D

Just a reminder to everyone that we are trying to keep the spam out and sometimes that means we don't activate a member that we should have. If you've put your activtion request in more than a week or two ago, and not had it take yet, please send me an e mail and let me know. Especially if your user names is exceptionally unusual or could sound like someone with something to sell.  Or, if you have a very unusual e mail provider.  As soon as you tell me you are a real person, I'll activate the account, or tell you to register if I've deleted it.  Sorry for the extra trouble, but it's just really hard to tell sometimes who genuinely wants to come here and read fic, and who just wants to try to sell things or be a troll. :)

Gee, I hadn't thought of that--the idea that people selling things would violate other sites.  Glad to see you are protecting us.  Those of you having trouble getting an account, stick with it because this site is definitely worth it!

Hey, here is my chance to get educated.  I have heard the term trolling but don't know what it means.  Splainy, please!

A troll is someone who posts inflammatory, irrelevant, or otherwise inappropriate messages on a site or forum - someone who is just trying to stir things up and/or get noticed.  Like the spammers who ocassionally show up on old threads to post the same message over and over, or to say something designed to restart an old argument. Stuff like that.   That's how I meant it, anyway.:)

I asked people who'd been rejected to send me an e mail, but this will do. I don't recognize your name or addy though. Have you reapplied?

ETA : You are not in the queue for membership validation.  You'll have to apply there before I can validate you as a member. I can't do it from here.  There were only three in the queue this morning - one spammer and two that look to be legit.

Wouldn't a captcha in the new member form prevent much of the spamming?  Just seems like it would be a good idea...  Then if you are a member maybe you don't have to do capcha for every review b/c you've been authorized already?  Sometimes i have to do capcha three or four times before i get it... if it's just for my initial membership, it wouldn't be bad, but for every review, it gets kind of old... but my main point is... regardless of whether reviews continue to require capcha for all members or not, that a capcha should exist on every place a non member wants to post...

*nods* That's a question for DIa. I forget now what her reasoning was for not putting it on the membership form, but I think she said something about it some time ago.  Sure would save me a lot of time and work if there was something to weed them out there. :)  I didn't know until just a few days ago that we had it on the review forms... or that it wasn't working well.  I'm going to try to bring it to her attention.

Thank you.  I think captcha by its very nature has to be somewhat hard to use b/c that's part of what makes it hard on the bots.  If people knew that they wouldn't need if if they were members, maybe more people would join so they could review?  I'm not complaining about captcha being there for non-member reviews.  It's actually a kindness that you do, since some sites don't allow non-members to post anything.  I don't want to see the site overrun by spammers either.  Really don't see what the trolls get out of it, but they're trolls, so their minds don't really work.

We try to make the site as friendly and accessible as we can, so we don't require membership for anyone to leave forum messages or anything like that - but, yes, anything that makes things easier for members might encourage more readers to join.  As soon as I hear from Dia, I'll let her know about all this stuff and see what she thinks she can do.

Hi Dani,  I activated you yesterday sometime and you are on the list as both divaslayer and divaslayer69, so you should be able to login with no trouble. The emails are generated automatically, I think, so I have no control over when/if they go out.

Dani,
Check your spam folder... sometimes Yahoo etc like to throw them in the spam.
