James's Incorrect Age

Mar 30 2008 11:14 pm   #1goldenusagi
http://jamesmarsters.com/james/articles2000.html

I was going back through some of James's interviews, and noticed something.  Some articles that give his age do not tell the truth.  The first, second, and fourth links on this page (from 2000) all knock about a decade off of James's age.  Did they think we wouldn't like him if they said he was almost 40?
Mar 30 2008 11:21 pm   #2LisFayte
James was born August 20th 1961, so that would make him 45 now. I don't care, he is still a hottie :D

He did, in fact, take a decade off his age.  I've seen interviews where he said he did it because he noticed no one in Hollywood was over 29 and thought he wouldn't get hired, and I've seen one where he said the studio did it because the show was aimed at teenagers.  Either way, it was pretty stupid. All you had to do was read his bio and be able to add to know that there was no way he could have done all the things he had  before he got on BtVS and not be a good ten years older than claimed. As if not listed his year of birth wasn't give away enough that something was rotten in Denmark... LOL
I thought it was 8/20/1962, though? Not that is matters much.  Still make me old enough to be his mother, just would have had to be a bit more precocious.

I always thought it was '62 as well, as far as I'm aware he's 6 months younger than Jon!

(And if he was born in '61 he'd be rising 47! lol)

I wonder when he decided to fess up.  I guess back then, he could pass for 10 years younger on looks, if you didn't know his bio.  Though no matter how good he looks now, I don't think I'd believe he's 35!   ;)

I read something recently by a Bangel talking about how dare Spuffy supporters accuse Angel of being a cradle-robber when we write Spike getting together with Buffy as a teenager too. Someone brought up James Marsters actual age and SMG's actual age and then David Boreanaz's actual age and a huge fight about actual age versus character's age, versus how old they look on the TV was started. I remember knowing James Masters age was wrong because the Bangel accused all of us of being conspiring liars trying to make it better by changing his age. It was pretty ridiculous by the end of the thread.

But at the pinnacle of hotness for Spike (not including the great flashbacks to New York when he was in punk style) I think Marsters was 37. By the time he got on AtS he did look older and they had him a lot more in sunlight due to the special windows so that was different with the make-up.

Has anyone else read articles where JM talks about what he dislikes about his looks or what he could change if he could, and realize it's stuff fanfic loves Spike for? Like the curls, or the so blue eyes, and someone mentioned that he doesn't have hair on his chest...
Mar 31 2008 12:19 am   #7slaymesoftly
He does look good. Of course, from my perspective, he's just a baby, anyway. :) I'd look good too, if I was only 45. :)

I think I've seen a picture of him with little curly hairs peeking out the top of his shirt.  He probably shaved or waxed his chest for all the topless stuff on BtVS.  I think a lot of actors/men do that when they are showing off their bodies. :)

Bangels are all insane. Why would anyone get into a discussion with them?  LOL

Ooh, now there's a topic for discussion:  what does everyone think Spike's hottest season was?  I'm gonna go with Buffy season 5.  And Mmmmm... don't even get me started on the punk flashback.  Yummy.

I think for me it was Season 2; I love evil!Spike, and all the leering and the snarkiness...*shakes head and wipes away drool*  Ok, I'm back.  Plus, didn't they have him in eyeliner and nail polish more in S2 then any other time??  Hot hot hot.  Except for punk!Spike.  Cause that was mucho hot.

evil!spike was super hot and alot of that did have to do with his attitude. bad ass dudes are just hot. and oh my freakin' god punk!spike was damn right delicious, needless to say that's one of the eps. that have gotten alittle more play time then the others. but i always thought crazy!spike was the hottest. crazy in the basement spike with his half brown half bleached curly tortured soul self. *shudder* the half grown out look got me every time. back when the show was on i didn't have net access like i do now, so i saw stuff as it came out, and i about died when is saw mr. marsters on andromeda. the perfect race, indeed.

Bangels are all insane. Why would anyone get into a discussion with them? - Because it's so much fun to run a stick along the bars of their cage.

Hard to believe that JM was in his thirties in Season 2 - he looks like such a baby face.  Hard to believe he didn't permanently adopt that haircut he had at the end of S5 - with all the curly spears.  Evil!Spike, Punk!Spike, William hanging from his chains in his baggy shorts, Crazy Basement Spike (why didn't Buffy just jump his bones ASAP?), Bathtub Spike, Spike in the Alley after he captured Angel to torture him into giving that damn ring back - he really looked vampy there with the pink lipstick and the eyeliner.  Spike having sex with Buffybot.  Spike smoking a ciggie while the Buffybot is giving him a blow job.  Spike having sex with Buffy in the old house and they both have their mouths hanging open.

Which brings up an important question, In Wrecked when they first have sex - who does the unzipping?  My money's on Buffy - or maybe it was  magic zipper and it just zzzzzzzzzz'd itself open.

If we want her to be exactly she'll never be exactly I know the only really real Buffy is really Buffy and she's gone' who?

Me and a friend just watched his part in The Green River Killer. My friend think's he's getting old looking, I think he's still hot.

Someone brought up James Marsters actual age and SMG's actual age

Sarah is just a few months older than I am, so I might have a similar perspective regarding James’s age.  When I was 21, I had a guy who wanted to date me who was 36.  I considered it, but I just couldn’t picture myself making out with a guy that much older than me.  He was good-looking and didn’t look 36, but he was just so frickin’ OLD. :-P I eventually decided against it.  On the other hand, my friend was dating a man 16 years her senior, and she was just fine with it.  So, I guess it’s just a matter of personal perspective.  Now, when they were gettin' it on for the camera, Sarah would have been 24, I believe.  At that point, 15 years would have been a lot less skeevy for me.  Of course, if the 36-year-old had looked like James, I might have felt differently ;-)

Ooh, now there's a topic for discussion: what does everyone think Spike's hottest season was?

For me, it’s Season 6, and that actually has nothing to do with all of the sex and shirtlessness and pantslessness.  Although, those were nice :-D  Spike’s hair was awesome during that season.  Maybe they had a different hairdresser or something.  Whatever the case, his curls were so curly and great, especially in Becoming II when he’s on the motorcycle with Dawn.

However, if we’re talking sexiest episode and not an entire season, then it’s, hands down, Lessons Spike   The vulnerability, the open shirt with the scars…and the best of all: Crazy Basement Hair!  Hot as hell

Has anyone else read articles where JM talks about what he dislikes about his looks or what he could change if he could, and realize it's stuff fanfic loves Spike for? Like the curls, or the so blue eyes, and someone mentioned that he doesn't have hair on his chest.

He definitely does have chest hair.  I've seen it peeking out of his shirt.  A lot of guys with curly hair hate it, but a lot of women love the curls.  Personally, I love his curls and his eyes :-)
Give me Spuffy, or give me death.

I liked the curly hair, too, but he didn't have it for most of season six. He had that hair from Crush until After Life, but for the rest of season six, he went back to the slicked back hair.

I adored the curly hair, it made his face more...angelic seeming, I guess.
Mar 31 2008 03:59 am   #16goldenusagi
The curly hair seemed to go with chivalrous, pining Spike.  I love that hair!  (I guess I'm the only one who didn't like crazy basement hair...)  Was it curly in Crush, though?  Maybe at the end when she slammed the door in his face, but I don't think for the rest of it.  Curly seemed to come around Intervention.  I like to think that the Buffybot mussed it up, and he never unmussed it.   :)
Mar 31 2008 04:00 am   #17Guest
The only thing that detracted from the hotness of S2 Spike was when his hair was gelled into a total helmet along his head, not just pushed straight. I think it was also brighter. I love the curls in S6 too, though they aren't as curly as S7 Basement Spike. I probably shouldn't be going on about his hair this long, tho...

But, Spikez_tart, what did you mean by Bathtub Spike? We get to see him in a bathtub? When!?!

And my favorite site of Spike will definitely be curly hair, complete ensemble, amazing expression, blue eyes, when Buffy comes down the stairs in Afterlife, S6. I wish I had that guy looking at me like that. *sigh*

So do I. He looks really beautiful there.
Mar 31 2008 04:02 am   #19Guest
Who else never got Angelus, the one with the angelic face? Maybe in the very beginning of the first season, DB looked a little angelic, but it didn't last long. His features aren't smooth enough and he's got a broad chin, nose, forehead... I forget what I read but in some Spuffy fic Buffy thinks about how she loves Angel, but she didn't get the whole Angelic Face thing, because his features were too blunt, but Spike really did seem angelic. Anyway, the author put the comparison into perfect words. Spike in the church, shirtless, all pale and in moonlight and smooth and the cheekbones... Love him!

Oh, yeah, I meant Intervention... duh. I always think of it as post-sex mussed hair. :) But yeah, it's that stretch of late season 5 to early season 6 when he's got the good hair.

But, Spikez_tart, what did you mean by Bathtub Spike? We get to see him in a bathtub? When!?!
Season four, when he's chained in Giles' bathtub.

I don't think DB has an angel face. I don't think he's that cute actually. JM's cheekbones, paler complexion, blue eyes, the blonde curls, they seem more angelic to me, exspecially next to the black leather he wears, it's such a contrast.

It's Smashed actally. But I sometimes mix up the titles too cause they're both huge Spuffy moments and are kinda similar titles.

But to answer your question, I believe it was actually the will power of all the Spuffy shippers watching that ep. We had wanted them to finally be together so much, that we forced that zipper down.

I remember that my friend and I were really annoyed with all the UST when the episode aired, and whenever Spike and Buffy were in a scene together, we'd yell at the TV, "Oh my god! Just have sex already!" So during the fight scene, we were both quietly chanting, "Do it do it do it do it" over and over. Then when they started kissing, she said, "Yes! Finally! Ok, come on, have sex. Come on!!" More kissing, Buffy wraps her legs around Spike, I say, "Oh my god!! This is it! Sex!! Please be sex!! This better be sex or I'm--" and that was when we heard the zipper. We were both silent the last moments of the ep, and when it ended, we looked at each other and I said, "Did we do that?" and she said, "Probably not, but let's just say we did." And the next day we bragged to our other friends that our combined telepathic powers got Spike and Buffy to finally do it :-D

i remeber were i was when i watched that eps. first too, and i have to say i honestly didn't know what was going on at first. cause i had been yelling at the t.v., i didn't hear the zipper.(which when i saw it again i was like "how in the hell did i NOT hear that??") when they were looking at each other, i was soooo confused, thinking, 'are they doin' it, or what?' and then they fell and i was like 'SWEET, 'bout freakin' time' !! overall, that eps. kinda blew, but once he started beating her ass and then with the kissing and what not, took a total turn for the better.
and it was totally our mind power.

1962. He turned 45 last year. And Sarah's only a month and a half older than me, with April 1977.

I can say that James looks fabulous in person, since I saw him yesterday, even though he is older than Spike's first appearance.

The WB wanted him to keep his age a mystery, until he revealed it when he was 40, as they weren't sure they should have teen girls lusting after an actor well into his 30s. But he's always looked younger than his age.

James is a total, sexy hot F.I.L.F., and I don't care he's twenty-three years my senior.  Age (sometimes) is just inconsequential.  And, he's aging nicely.  Season 5-6 are probably my fave Spike looks.  As for the character, love all the aspects--good, bad, or straight up evil doesn't matter to me.

I have two words about the age issue. . . Sean Connery.

Connery looks better as an older man than he ever did in the early James Bond films - He is simply elegant and a completely beautiful looking man -

One of the most extraordinary things with James Marsters and his role as Spike is that, IMO, there was never anytime in the entire series when he looked more beautiful than in Seeing Red - the irony of having him look so gorgeous and vulnerable in that scene is just great.  That scene and his scene with Clem, I don't think he ever looks better.  And the opposite to his looking totally great in the most horrible moment in his Buffyverse life, is when he appears in the first section of "Beneath You" - the look that he was given in that episode I think is the worst ever for him.  Not that he looks bad, 'cause that just can't really be, but it is a strange look with the hair change and the camera work which made him look taller and lanky.

And - there are a lot of "slightly mature men & women" who totally fell in love with Spike and all The Buffyverse - Spuffy is just one more treat, I completely fell for Spuffy

I personally never liked him with those spiky curls that he starts showing in "Bargaining"  -  I guess the softer hair style and curls were meant to make him seem less dangerous - I liked his slicked back look better and I loved Punk Spike -

I just got on and I have to say that I thought it was obvious who pulled down the zipper. Besides the fact that Buffy had started the kiss, then wouldn't let Spike take control and shoved him against the wall, then climbed up him like a tree... We then hear the sound and Buffy jerks her hand back, moving her jacket aside in a pretty obvious gesture. Spike stares up at her, obviously shocked, and Buffy looks back at him. Then, SHE starts to move.  Who thought it was Spike? he seemed too shell-shocked to do anything but react to me, not just unzip his pants and start shagging Buffy. He didn't do that the other times they kissed.

Well, really, it's a magic zipper. . . because the next morning, as he's getting dressed --- he's buttoning up his fly. . . not zipping.

So yeah, the power of the positive thought worked there.

Miss Martin - it's frosted white at the moment. It's really obvious in the close-ups from the Paley Event. His natural color is medium brown, used to be dark, but the white's been coming in more and more. They're probably going to touch it up when he goes back to Smallville before the 11th. (And cut the curls).

Oh, yeah, Sean Connery's still hot! His voice will always be hot no matter how he looks, but he took to age with such distinguish.

that's so true. i can only think of one or two times that spike ever instigated their acts...well maybe instigated isn't the right word, because he is the embodiment of sex, but he never kissed first or touched first. probly because he was afriad she'd pop him in the nose...which did happen, so his fear was pretty justified.

*still reading old James interviews*  Y'know, if he was going to knock 10 years off his age, he could at least try to pick ONE age and stick with it.  :)   Several articles from the same year list him as alternately 28 and 31, and once his birthday was given as August 1971 and once as August 1969.  What a tangled web, LOL.

Oh hell...Knew I'd screw that up.  E's right--I'm 22.

As for Sean Connery, Goldie Hawn had a great quote about that in "The First Wives Club" (which, I may also butcher...) "Sean Connery's  a hundred and fifty years, old, but he's still a stud!" or something.

Sean Connery is handsome at any age but I love him in this more mature stage - I just think he is such a good actor - but then I totally fell in love with Shelby Foote and his keen intellect and rugged mature looks as well.

Outside of James Marsters and Spike - who is your favorite male vamp actor?

I always loved Frank Langella (sp?) and I love Brad Pitt as Louis - Gary Oldman is such a great actor and his Count was also wonderful - but it is hard to compare his Dracula because the film treatment is so different.

Word again!  Not sexy, but wonderfully evil and scary.

I actually, after shuddering for months at the very idea of Tom Cruise playing Lestat, thought that he did a good job there.  I expected a disaster and was pleasantly surprised to find that he sank his teeth into the role (*gasp, wheeze, chortle* Oh, God! I'm sorry!  Couldn't resist) and did a credible job with it.

Out of time - I'm going to spend the day think ing of all the actors that have played vampires and trying to decide which ones I liked best. :)

I enjoyed Tom Cruise's Lestat.  Granted, I was in 8th grade when I first saw Interview with the Vampire and hadn't read the book yet (which I did immediately after the viewing), but I thought it was a good performance.  I think Brad Pitt captured Louis well, but I just never liked the whole whiney, I'm so tortured attitude.

Johnny Depp Vampire, now that would really be something - Can you image Johnny Depp as Lestat - don't think he would be good as Louis, but as Lestat he would have been great.  I love the Anne Rice Vampire Chronicles I even has autographed copies -

I wish somebody would get into a good fun mood and do a comedy fic with Andrew dreaming the Rice Vamps with The Buffyverse group in their place.

Gary Oldman. . . . the man is just so psychotically brilliant.

I frickin' LOVE Gary Oldman.  He's one of the select really excellent actors.

Age (sometimes) is just inconsequential.
i have always lusted after older men, always. when i was like seven i wanted to marry patrick swayze and brendan fraser. when i actually got old enough to be lusting after men, i was still into older guys. finding out the ages of actors never phased me, cause who cares, their still dreamy. (i was mildly surprised that i fell so hard and married my man at only two years older then i.)

I never really went in for the archetypal vampires; The Lost Boys and the vamps in Near Dark were more my speed.  Someone mentioned crossover fics...I would like to see a fic where the Scoobies went to Santa Carla, California.  That would be fun!

Gary Oldman, I LOVE him too - he is one of the truly gifted actors that takes on a role and you don't see Gary Oldman, you see the character he is playing.  There are a great many actors that I love to watch, but you see first the actor playing a role, not like Oldman - John Hurt in his earlier career was the same,

Forgot about The Lost Boys - very good as well  - as are the vamps in The Underworld Series - but I first was thinking of the established Count Dracula - I can't wait to see what the new Werewolf is going to be like - I love the 1941 Hollywood classic with Lon Chaney Jr.

Right with you there.  He was uncannily like Sid Vicious, also Joe Orton in 'Prick Up Your Ears'.

I remember thinking James was not much older than my son, so I shouldn't be lusting.  When I found out he was six years older, I told myself it was okay -

The best part about this whole thread is finding out the ages of other Spuffy fans!  Hey, what do you know--I'm not the only one older than James who adores him!  (Slaymesoftly--you just became my hero!)  But isn't that what makes James and Spike both so special?  There aren't many guys or characters who could generate devotion from such a wide age spectrum.  And isn't it great that while most 20 somethings wouldn't hang out with us 50 somethings in another setting, we all have JM/Spike to bring us together and give us a bond?   :-)

I've always had a thing for older men as well.  The older I get, the smaller the gap gets, but still...
I'm in my mid-thirties.  My husband is in his forties.

James is just hot, at any age.  : )

And, just in case he reads this, LOL!  My husband is hot at any age, too.

I was very surprised at the ages at our old Buffy board - I thought my  age would place me as the "odd ball oldie"  but I found many of the most avid fans there were late thirties and forties - I was the grandmother of the group, by a few years, but age was never became an issue.  Everyone at our board had their individual perspectives and having POV's that came with different ages  added much to our discussons.

It is kind of cool.  I've got on line "friends" who range from younger than my youngest child, to almost my age.  And some "in RL ones" too.  Of course, that means I have to sit on my virtual hands every once in a while to keep from getting too motherly in my responses to comments and posts.  LOL  (And some of them will tell you that my hands escape fairly frequently and I go into "Mom mode" involuntarily.  Habits of life-time - *sigh*)

I remember when I found out James's age.  I said, "Hmm...45--that's not too much older."  My mom said, "Hmm...45's not too much younger." :-)

And, just in case he reads this, LOL! My husband is hot at any age, too.
