Methinks the Lady Doth Protest Too Much

I think Buffy always was always attracted to Spike (who wouldn't be?), and the "Will Be Done" spell probably did the job if she wasn't already.  But, personally, I think she fell in love him after he was tortured by Glory.  Everyone--Dawn, Giles, Xander, Willow, Tara, Anya, not to mention the entire world--depends on Buffy to come to their rescue, to save the day, to be the hero, to sacrifice life, love, and limb, to fulfill her sacred duty.  Spike is the first person to protect Buffy for the sake of protecting Buffy.  He doesn't keep Dawn a secret from Glory because it's the right thing to do.  He doesn't do it for the sake of the world.  Spike does it so that Buffy doesn't feel any pain.  He does it because he loves her.  It's Buffy's job to save the world, but Spike makes it his job to save Buffy.

When do you think that Buffy fell in love with Spike, and why do you think she fell in love with him?  Do you think that it was a gradual process, or was it a specific moment when she fell in love with him, even if she didn't realize it at the time?

Give me Spuffy, or give me death.

I think Buffy fell in love at the end of S5 after Glory hda him and before she jumped. Too much happened for her to even recognize it though and that carried over to S6. I think she was attracted from the start. The way they jut couldn't seem to kill the other one and the way they loved to fight each other (but not to the kill) reminds me of kids who taunt and fight because of a crush. I think she was falling in parts of S4 (Something Blue) too but she went all the way after Intervention IMHO. Kathleen

BTW...forgive the way my text looks. I am having weird computer problems. For example with forum threads I only get the "Quote" window to type in and not the regular area. This means no paragraphs, etc. Grrrrr Arghhhhh. Kathleen

Your text looks fine Kathleen, don't worry. And while you said you weren't looking for me to "fix" your problem with the forum, I'll see about adding an optional text-field for those of you who have problems with JavaScript anyway. :-) After all I want everyone to be able to access all parts of the site. (Plus, I can't stop thinking about a problem until it is fixed, or until I know it can't be fixed, anyway. LOL)

I agree - I think the sexual tension may have always been there, but I think the way she was coming to trust and depend upon him toward the end of Season V was the beginning - there just was no time to explore it before she died.  Which is what makes the whole mess of season VI so sad - at the beginning, they seemed to pick up right where they left off - friends, one of whom was in love - and then suddenly, when the secret came out, she's kissing him one minute and punching him the next.  It isnt difficult to twist season VI so that she admits to being in love, though - as there are so many glimpses of playful, happy sex and a few scenes of what appears to be affection.  Her sobbing to Tara about using him indicates that she cared enough to not want to hurt him.    And, I've completely forgotten the original question! LOL

I agree... I think they were always attracted to each other and that it WAS a gradual process... but I think that she really 'fell' after the Glory incident.

Why? A combination of many things, I guess... but, yes, I too believe that the fact that he allowed himself to be tortured and nearly killed for ‘Buffy’ and not the slayer or the world--but so that Buffy wouldn’t be hurt either emotionally or physically was the icing on the cake, so to speak. And I’m probably making no sense whatsoever—migraines + thinking are definitely unmixy.

I think it helped, too, that he respected her family. Angel couldn't have cared less for Joyce if she wasn't Buffy's mom, and Riley never tried getting to know Joyce or Dawn. Spike made friends with both of them before Buffy ever gave him the time of day. That had to matter some after the Glory incident.

She didn't seem to have a problem being friends with him until the kissing...and just one kiss sends the girl into "I hate you" zone? That didn't even make sense. I've always wondered what she would have done if he backed off from wanting to talk about the 2 kiss moments. Would she have calmed down and eventually resumed the friendship?

I agree, it was after Glory. But I think she felt something since she first met him. The whole fighting, and back and forth with the "I hate you," etc. was all crush acting. You know, boy likes girl, boy pulls her hair. Girl likes boy, girl punches boy in arm. Something Blue gave both of them the opening to explore their feelings without anyone judging them because of the spell.

Buffy defending why Spike was with them when they all fled from Glory in the winny spoke volumes for me.

The whole brake down to Tara after coming back, again said a lot. She wanted them to be friends, she didn't want to use him, but felt she didn't deserve his love. And Spike for his part allowing her to beat him like raw meat, showed just how much he did love her. Oh, and when she saw him and Anya having sex, she was hurt, deeply. But she caused it.

I think it's important to make the distinction between lust and love. I know there was sexual tension between them right from the start and Spike's unconventional view of the world and life and Drusilla let Buffy think of him differently than bloodlust-driven fledgelings. Even in early season five Spike seemed to think of it more as a lust thing, like wanting Buffy's body when he should just hate her and everything she stands for. It's only slowly that he seems to realize it's more than that- like the back porch scene in FFL or saving her when she won't know and thank him in Family. It was after he was tortured by Glory, expecting to die, so what was teh point if she wouldn't thnak him and let him sleep with her, that was the turning point Buffy noticed. Then she died and came back and things were really messed up.
Spike loved her and had learned a lot about selfless love, I think, while she was gone, but Buffy was really messed up. She was unsure of herself so she clung to what she already knew as truth and tried to act like her old self, which involved hating 'soulless demons' indiscriminately. At the same time, she was upset that Spike could love like he did when she couldn't feel that, especially toward the friends who pulled her from heaven who she should love. I think the real question is when did Buffy admit to herself that loved, not trusted or wanted, Spike. Was it season six and she denied it or season seven adn she hid it or that last night before Chosen?

It's Buffy's job to save the world, but Spike makes it his job to save Buffy.
That would make sense because when she came back, he said every night I saved you in my dreams.

Yep there was an attraction there right from that I will kill you on Saturday line in Schools hard, I am not exactly sure when she started to love him.

I always believed that she was in love with him in season six, but that she buried her feelings so deep down and denied them that she didn't realize it. She knew she had feelings for him, but that she could be in love with him I don't think she could contemplate that.

When she says at the end of Dead Things, 'You always hurt the ones you love.' I think that was when I believed she loved him, even after what she had just done. Also, in season seven when she says, 'Why does everyone think I'm still in love with Spike?' It implied that she was in love with him before.
