Fic You're Proud of

Sep 09 2008 05:32 pm   #1sosa lola
I'm in the mood to read a very good fic, whatever the pairing is, gen, het, slash, anything. And since lots of your are writers. I'd really like if you tell me your favorite fic written by you, one that you're really proud of. I'd like to know why you love it the most as well. And of course, I want a link, because I wanna read it :)

Second Chances is one I am quite proud of and working on a sequel to it:
http://www.bloodshedverse.com/stories.php?go=chapters&no=2734

Also non Spuffy stories I am quite proud of are (not really involving parings at all...gen fic so not on this site):
Closed Circle:
http://www.athenewolfe.com/justrewards/viewstory.php?sid=469
and Bringer of Death:
http://www.athenewolfe.com/justrewards/viewstory.php?sid=468

I am also very proud of The Ice Queen:
http://www.athenewolfe.com/justrewards/viewstory.php?sid=471

Hope these give you something different to read.

Thank you so much, Kathleen. I can't wait to read them all :)

I have quite a few favourites, but the ones I'm most proud of are probably Time Around Me Whispers and We All Have Destinations. They're both short fics, but they both just worked exactly the way I wanted them to. And possibly A Future Set in Sand simply because of the fight scenes that were an absolute bitch to write, but I think turned out quite well. (I HATE writing fight scenes!)

Um...sometimes my favs and readers' favs aren't the same.  Some that you might like and won't find on here would be He Needs Me (http://spuffystuff.org/heneedsme.html) and He Ain't Heavy, He's My Vampire (http://spuffystuff.org/heaintheavy.htm)  (note, one is an html, one is an htm). The first one is Spander, the second is Spike-Xander friendship, set season six. I think it catches their characters at the time pretty well.  All my spuffy stuff is probably on here somewhere. :)

Well, I'd recommend any of my shorts found here--they're brief and IMHO satisfying.  First and foremost would be "Use Me Up" or "Her Word"--that one seems to be, well, embraced fondly...

Second would be "Work In Progress," because of the subject matter, how I handled it, and one of the most kick ass endings ever.

As for non-spuffy, well my Spangel one-shot "Destined": http://ms-scarletibis.livejournal.com/25681.html#cutid1
And a Xordelia fic that I was pretty proud of writing, which explored their relationship (briefly) through s3: http://ms-scarletibis.livejournal.com/13858.html#cutid1

And boy oh boy did I pimp the hell out of myself :P

Well, right now, I'd say I'm most proud of "Closure," but I'm pretty sure you're already reading that. :) Other than that, I think my favorite is Shadows of a Brighter Day and the reader favorite is Ebbing of the Tide (my two tear-jerkers, lol).

The fic I'm proudest of is For Whom The Bell Tolls, which is posted here.  http://www.bloodshedverse.com/stories.php?go=chapters&no=6690

I've also got a series of crossover fics that I realy like, but that would require you to know something about Supernatural. (If you don't watch the show, cause I'm not sure if you do or not.) If you do watch Supernatural, let me know, and I can give you a link.

Ah, the story I'm most proud of is an all Human one; with extreme angst and dark situations.  It's a very, very tough read, and deals with some serious subject matter, but I think it's the best written of all my stories.

http://dark-solace.org/elysian/viewstory.php?sid=1777&warning=NC-17

Like I said, it's a tough read, but I think it's worth it.  But that's just my opinion.  Not many people are reading it.

Not many people are reading it.
i'm reading it and it rocks...you know in an f'ed up way that that kind of story does. :]
i wouldn't recommened anything that i've written, cause i haven't finished either of them. but i would recommened other peoples work. forward to time past by unbridled brunnette is awesome, and unless you have like all the time in the world, is long enough to keep you going for a good minute afore she cliff hangs it again... only time will tell by dampersandspoons..which i'm just now relizing is also a time travel fic.  murphy's law by i'm_blood_english or as eowyn already said closure. those are some of the good one's i've been reading lately.
Your heart will break, your tears will fall, but don't be suprised, if there is someone there, to catch you when you fall. Becuase you, yes you, are awesome.
Sep 10 2008 02:24 pm   #11sosa lola

Good to share this big amount of fics :D I've read a few of them and you guys did not disappoint, but there are some I haven't read and I'm very excited to read.

Slaymessoftly, I know what you're saying about fics you're proud of but may not be your readers' fave. I've written a Jerk!Xander story that I'm really proud of but so many of my readers thought I was bashing Xander (I'm his biggest fan!!!) But it seems that some fans can't take that their fave character isn't perfect. I have read He Needs Me and it's one of my favorite Spander fics, you should be proud of it, especially since it's your first Spander ;)

Eowyn, I knew you'd be proud of Closure and you should. It's on my top list of favorite Spuffy stories and general stories as well. It breaks the old Perfect!Spike, Evil!Riley, Good Buffy vs Bad Scoobies tired themes. Plus it got a tight plot with unpredictable surprises.

LadyYashka, I don't watch Supernatural, even though I know I should!!! I can't wait to read the fic you recced ;)

Niamnh, don't worry, I'm a very flexable reader. I give everything a chance, and I'm not that hard to please. I'll read it and tell you what I think :)

Since we're all sharing, I wanna share mine as well. I wish my Spuffy fic is done so I can share it because I'm really proud of it, but it's still in my beta's hands and I vowed not to post it until it's finished. But I have some gen fics to share:

Adapting to Change, Buffy-centric, where Buffy deals with the changes Post-S6 and Pre-S7, basically the summper between the two seasons. It has a hint of Spuffy, which you must have when writing later seasons Buffy ;)

http://lusciousxander.livejournal.com/75754.html#cutid1

The Ruin of Good Men, Xander-centric, this is my Jerk!Xander fic. It's dark and destructive, after Normal Again, Xander is abusing alcohol, Spike and on top of that himself. (A reader thought it was a Spander because of a drunken kiss, but it's not. I needed that kiss to make Xander more abusive, but I see it as more Spuffy/Xanya than Spander even though it's mainly gen.)

http://lusciousxander.livejournal.com/60223.html#cutid1

The Shadow by the Door, now this could be considered a Spander, but it's not. It's creepy, dark, has a hint of rape, mind-control and Spike!Angst. Well, it's set in S7, so.

Thanks for starting this thread - lots of stories that I did not know about and sound very interesting -  being based on Most Proud Of is an excellent point of reference.   Lots of great Bloodshedverse reading ahead -

Niamh - started "Safe In My Own Skin" - no wonder this is one of your "most proud" works -

I feel weird recommending any of my fictions because sadly, I don't find myself really proud of a lot of my writing.  I think the ones I'm most proud of are a couple of my all human fictions, and in here I would probably say I'm most proud of my fictions Break You: www.bloodshedverse.com/stories.php and Star-Crossed: www.bloodshedverse.com/stories.php  Both I went out of my comfort zone and did something that I've never done before, so to me that's an accomplishment, even though I still think I have a lot that could use improvement.
When I say, "I love you," it's not because I want you or because I can't have you. It has nothing to do with me. I love what you are, what you do, how you try. I've seen your kindness and your strength. I've seen the best and the worst of you, and I understand with perfect clarity exactly what you are. You're a hell of a woman. You're the one, Buffy.

Like others have said above, it seems that there's occasionally a divide between my personal favorites and what's most popular with readers. A very well-received fic of mine is Beneath Us, a FITB one-shot following the fade to black in "Beneath You." It's companion piece, of sorts, Acts of Contrition, is also a fic with a beautiful atmosphere that follows Buffy, Spike and Dawn after Buffy rescues Spike from the First in "Showtime."

Two of my personal favorites (that are non-Spuffy) both feature Faith. I adore writing her and exploring her complexity as a character. Window-Dressing is an AU "5x5" in which Spike meets Faith in LA gunning for his next Slayer. It's my most original piece and one that I still love rereading.

By A Thread follows Faith and Angel during and shortly after "Not Fade Away." It's heart-breaking, but one of the most beautiful things I've ever written IMO. I fell in love with the idea of Faith and Angel in that fic.

I hope you enjoy the above pieces as much as I do.

Hi there!

I know I'm one of the least known writers around, but couldn't resist some self-pimping :-P The long fic I'm kind of proud of still has four chapters to go before it's complete and is all human. It's called "Mixing Business with Fanfic" and you can find it here along with everything else I've written (which isn't all that much, really). Out of my short stories, I kind of like "Resolutions are for Suckers" and "If Wishes were Spikes, Buffy would Have Two". Hope you like them if you get around to reading them.

I was not going to reply to this, as I never know what to say about my own stuff.  But since everyone else has--  I'm proud of my fic Sideways. It's the first thing I had written in several years, and my first Buffy fic ever, and I'm more than pleased with how it's turning out.  I took a different idea and went with it, and have got my own little AU Buffyverse going.  It's here on the BSV.

Thank you.  As you can see from the Author's notes, it's a tough one.  But I think it's a story that needs to be told

- started "Safe In My Own Skin" - no wonder this is one of your "most proud" works -

I am touched that you're enjoying (though that really isn't the right word, now, is it?) the story.  Thanks so much for reading it.

You should! It's the best supernatural based show since Buffy!

And I hope you enjoy the fic. It merges two of my loves, Buffy and Fantasy. :)

Yay! I can play two different persons. :D Sosa Lola is my forum name, all forums I joined I sign by this name. Lusciousxander is my fanfic writer name, because I started it with a friend of mine. She's lusciousspike and I'm lusciousxander, we started together writing slash and then each of us started to write single. :)

Now to feedbacks: Kathleen, Always_jbj and Scarlet, I've feedbacked you in the Reviews. Still got some fics to read of yours Scarlet ;)

Slaymesoftly, there was no feedback butten, so I'll do it here. He Ain't Heavy, He's My Vampire was so wonderful. I pretty much can't believe that Xander told the man Spike was a vampire, but I guess there's no other way, good to see a Sunnydalian not in denial ;) Loved the Xander-Spike interaction, especially the last exchange.

I've always wished for more Spike-Xander friendship stories, sadly there are more than 1000 000 000 Xander/Spike stories but all are slash. And all the friendship stories are usually a sub for a Spuffy or a Spangel or whatever pairing.

My own personal favourites - oh dear, they may not be the ones other people like.   They are all on this site -  Splinters, the very first story I ever wrote, so I am very protective of this one and have to stop myself going in and editing it.   Never Alone - I  think this was the first after the Apocalypse story I wrote and I felt I was just watching the story unravel in front of me.   I must admit to a secret liking for Cousin Arabella and the sequel Three for a Secret because I adore Arabella and her husband Div'vid.

Those are all finished.  On the wips - I must say Future Imperfect because I wanted to explore what it would mean to be a Slayer's child and Business as Usual because Agnes Pringle has taken over my life!

Be glad of your comments if you get a chance to read any of these.

I still consider myself to be a novice writer, so I can't say any of my stories are very good.  I'm very happy with the way In Harm's Way turned out.

The one I'm really proud of is my story set in the 1600's in the the Buffyverse with a slayer and a vampire.  It's a companion story to Soul Survivors, which can be read here and has characters from that story in it, but because the story is in the past, none of the BTVS characters are involved.

I just really got into the writing of it and I was so happy with how it turned out.  It can be read as a stand alone story, but if you are familiar with Torch the Scottish vampire and Andra the slayer from Soul Survivors, it tells the story of how they met and fell in love and how they ended up in Buffy and Spike's time (no time travel involved).

Out of all my own stories, it's the one I enjoy reading over and over again the most.

It's called Torchair Air Eideadh (Torch of the Undead)

Thanks for starting this post sosa - When I saw it I thought immediately that I would pimp my latest story, but then I thought I would take a look at the others (still looking) and see if the latest was necessarily the best.   It's been a useful exercise to look at the old and see where I've improved and see what's been lost in the shuffle.

This is such an interesting thread! Always interesting to see if readers' fav coincides with writer's fav.

I would have to say I'm most proud of my story Victims of Fate. (It's on here somewhere.) It was the longest story I had ever written and I still miss it sometimes :-) It was a true labour of love., especially as most of my other fics were Season Six and with this I journeyed waaaay back to Season Two/Three. And I was so proud of the nominations it got. :-)

This might just be me, but do any of you find yourselves with sudden cravings to read an old story of yours? I find it happening when I've got writer's block especially. It helps to remember that I could write back then! :-D

I often go back and reread my older stuff. Sometimes I cringe, but when I'm pleased with something, it does give the muse a kick in the ass and gets him going again.  We had a discussion about this on somebody's LJ and it turns out that a lot of us read our own fics.  I mean, hey! If you can't please yourself, who can you please? LOL

Well, quite! I have stories that I love and others that I just think 'meh, what were you thinking?!'. Unsurprisingly, the ones that I like are the ones that I share by posting. The others.... well, they are doomed to stay on my laptop. I just don't have the heart to delete them, no matter how bad they are. :-)

Finality, which is posted here. It's the only and best raw thing that's just poured out of me. I wrote it, loked it over for typos, and posted. Never been that easy before or since.

I have way too many WIPs now. I suck. I'm so sorry for my readers. The muse hasn't been the same for about a year.

it turns out that a lot of us read our own fics

I think most (all?) of us are writing because we have stories that we want to tell, and it's a fair assumption that they would be stories that we would want to read.  I know I always reread my favourite books, so rereading my fics is much the same thing. If it's one of my older ones I will quite often cringe at the style, or at things that I wish I'd done better, but I still pretty much always enjoy the story. And as Patti said, it can sometimes get the muse going.

I have a few fics I'm proud of...namely later stories, because I badly want to edit some of my earlier work (and in fact will when I don't have so much on my plate). These I'm proud of mainly because they were difficult for me to write, in one way or another. I always feel a sense of accomplishment when I've finished doing something that took a lot out of me. All of these did just that.

Echoes
The Headstone
Ghosts Appear and Fade Away
And I'd have to add Harbingers of Beatrice, even if I have begun editing it.

Some of the most difficult work I've done involves non-Spuffy pairings (though neither Spike or Buffy as a main character...Spike/other or Buffy/other squicks me verily)

Those would be:
Elements (Faith/Wesley)
Healing Crystals (Willow/Tara)
And Lolita (Giles/Faith) ... this one I don't like so much for its style or story, more for the fact that I actually got it written, especially when I wanted to throw my hands up and quit halfway through it.

Well I'm like most likely month slate, lol. But I only have a very few fics that I am truly proud of ('cause I think I suck as a writer, lol) But I will recomend them to ya!

First is my baby, and after almost a year I will be updating with the next chapter in the next few days (it's been sitting on my harddrive for 8 months just been going through a lot and haven't posted)
It Happned One Night
Second would be Kiss from a Rose
Last  967-EVIL 'casue it's funny
And in the air the fireflies
Our only light in paradise
We'll show the world they were wrong
And teach them all to sing along
