William's Poem--Prophetic?

Some musing's on William's poem.

I was looking over the transcript of "Not Fade Away" for some reason or other, and came across William's poem.  Now, I realize that the last four lines were written about three and a half years before the beginning, but it is implied that this is William's original poem, finalized on the night of his turning, interesting enough--the end of William's human existence, and the very beginning of Spike's road.  And it sounds damn prophetic to me, considering that it is exactly what happens to Spike.

"My soul is wrapped in harsh repose;
Midnight descends in raven-colored clothes.
But soft...behold!
A sunlight beam
Cutting a swath of glimmering gleam.
My heart expands,
'Tis grown a bulge in it
Inspired by your beauty--
Effulgent."

My soul is wrapped in harsh repose

I think on a metaphorical scale, it's in a harsh rest once he gets it back, because while it's back where it belongs, it's harsh from the bombardment of Spike's memories, which would abhor William  (keep in mind--Spike is William, but William was not Spike.  Their official integration, for lack of a better term, takes place between "Get It Done" and "Lies My Parents Told Me" in my opinion).  The repose is "harsh," because there is nothing more to be done than to accept the past.

Midnight descends in raven-colored clothes.

Midnight--darkness--death--
black.  This can be interpreted in multiple ways.  But I'll stick to the poetry of it.  Spike descends to the bottom to meet his demise.  His death.  In raven colored clothes no less.

But soft...behold!
A sunlight beam
Cutting a swath of glimmering gleam.

Now clearly, this could be a reference to the amulet, literally cutting a swath of glimmering gleam.  But also it is a representation of Spike's love, which brought him there in the first place.  His love--his soul--is the light in this underground.

My heart expands,
'Tis grown a bulge in it
Inspired by your beauty--
Effulgent.

As all of this glorious light is emitting from Spike, he says he can feel his soul--he knows without a doubt it's really there.  His eyes grow wider, and he kind of smiles, even though it stings to feel it in such a way.  It is after this that Spike decides to "see how it ends," inspired from the beauty of William's soul.

Hey, if I'm reaching or not, it works.

Drusilla: Your wealth lies here... and here. In the spirit and... imagination. You walk in worlds the others can't begin to imagine.

This sums up Spike nicely.  After all, who'd have ever thought a "soulless thing" would ever go on a life or death quest to regain his soul, knowing the torment and regret that lay ahead of him if he were to succeed?

Drusilla: I see what you want. Something glowing and glistening. Something... effulgent.

And in the same episode of "Fool for Love," with her blue nail polish representing her sadness (I don't recall where the hell I heard it, but the black was for when she was weak, red when she was strong, and blue for when she was sad) at knowing she had lost him already, she tells Spike this:

I have to find my pleasures, Spike. You taste like ashes.

Somehow, the great effulgence his seer of a sire saw in him lead to him tasting like ashes, which it literally does.

First of all, when I heard the poem recited for the first time, I thought that what was said was "My soul is rapt in harsh repose."  I guess it works either way...

I can't recall the story now, but I've read a fic that describes his poem as prophetic, but it was more in a generalized way, with the soul and midnight descending representing his turning, the sunlight beam representing Buffy's introduction into his life and the subsequent lines his love for her.

But I definitely like the correlation between the poem and his final battle in Chosen.  Very interesting, indeed!

Ah...it works either way though, yes.  Next time I watch that ep, I'll watch it with closed captions on ;)

but I've read a fic that describes his poem as prophetic, but it was more in a generalized way, with the soul and midnight descending representing his turning, the sunlight beam representing Buffy's introduction into his life and the subsequent lines his love for her.
I've heard that be described before (though I haven't read the fic that you mentioned), but that never worked for me for a couple of reasons--

Spike never saw his turning as going down, but up, not to mention the huge gap between his turning and his meeting Buffy, let alone falling in love with her.  And his heart has always been full of love.  His love for Dru was a different kind of love than his love for Buffy, sure (really, only in the topical sense, because she was meant to destroy him and his kind, so it was a "in love with your enemy" thing in a way), but no less great (and lasted over a century in Dru's case).  And in both instances, he tried to be the man they wanted him to be.

Okay, ramble, sorry :P

Spike's variation of his original Cecily Poem could also be a statement of Spike and his life coming full circle again - he loved and lost his first life motivated by love, pain and sorrow but he also finds a new life through  his "raven colored clothes" which is Drusilla/Death/Black Kali.  Spike meets both death and life in that alley with Dru.  With Buffy he reaches out again for Love and again lives in pain and with sorrows -  but Buffy directs him back toward the Light and the Sun; the universal Life Force that is inseparable from its counter part, human death.

A very important part of this poem I think is the connection of his love for Buffy and the Initiative chip.  It's that chip as well as his capacity to love that  together eventually create the en-souled Spike.  The reason that I give the chip much importance when connecting with Drusilla and Spike's transformation is her "little fishes" (paraphrase) lines - The Fish in the Sea are another symbol of man's development and changed life.

Your observation on the use of "soft" are excellent -

From Legen - Scarlet Ibis:

"Now clearly, this could be a reference to the amulet, literally cutting a swath of glimmering gleam.  But also it is a representation of Spike's love, which brought him there in the first place.  His love--his soul--is the light in this underground."

"As all of this glorious light is emitting from Spike, he says he can feel his soul--he knows without a doubt it's really there.  His eyes grow wider, and he kind of smiles, even though it stings to feel it in such a way.  It is after this that Spike decides to "see how it ends," inspired from the beauty of William's soul."

This description of his feeling of his soul and the little stinging, from my perspective tells of the very strong connections that vital parts of William and Spike shared.  While his physical body was going to burn to ash and into the amulet, his soul/spirit seemed to easily exist within his Spike/Vamp life form - he did not suffer huge intolerable pain, but his transformation was gentle and perfectly attuned with The Sun Life Universal Force Cycle of birth and death.  That's why Spike can find joy while his death is right there with him, he is perfectly in harmony with human life.

Spike-William poem can be interpreted as prophetic, but also as a description of his life journey  from Cecily-Drusilla-Buffy-Africa and at the face of Life-Death Cycle.

i can't recall how much of the poem is said in ffl, but barring that the whole poem isn't still about cecely (My soul is wrapped in harsh repose; Midnight descends in raven-colored clothes she was kind of a bitch, and while he did "love" her, i'm sure he was a smart enough guy to see that), just completed 200 and some change years later.
My soul is wrapped in harsh repose the time that he was a vampire, cause his soul wasn't there and yet it was a little.
Midnight descends in raven-colored clothes drusilla
But soft...behold life as a vampire wasn't that bad, in fact it made him a better man...pire

i wouldn't put it past william, or the writers, to write a prophetic poem. but on a different note, as i stated at the begining of this post, we never knew what the real beginning of the poem was. maybe it's a completely different peom that spike wrote, and he just thought the lines were still good and reused them.
you never know in the buffyverse.
p.s. thank you so much for posting the poem si. :)

Your heart will break, your tears will fall, but don't be suprised, if there is someone there, to catch you when you fall. Becuase you, yes you, are awesome.
