The Way Back Machine Listing

Dec 14 2009 07:41 pm   #1nmcil
Think it would be good to start a Site Links thread  - with all the wonderful stories and writers that are being lost from The Buffyverse, Angel and all the Whedonverse - a resource links list of your favorite writers and archive sites would be an important resource for our group -

PLEASE help develop this listing  - post the links to writers who are no longer active but whose sites are still up - or links for the sites that are no longer active - also for sites that you think might soon become inactive.  Since this list is not a new archive, only a WBM access resource, I think it is fine to lists the links.

With so many FF writers and archive sites being lost, this links list  will be an important resource for everyone and for keeping the Buffyverse, Angelverse and all the Joss Whedon FF works accessible.

Links List:

Great idea nmcil!  It breaks my heart to see how many great stories have been lost.  I urge those of you who have yours posted to leave them "up" even if you stop writing in the Buffy/Angelverse.

Here is the very first Spuffy site I ever found--many, many  years ago. It was my introduction to the Jossverse fanfiction concept.   If you want old, old stories that can't be found anywhere else, try Hilary's site.  I'm just glad she hasn't taken it down.  (Drop her a line and let her know you appreciate it being left up.)  There are hundreds and hundreds of fics by hundreds of authors at Death-Marked Love:

Thank you for adding the links - this is meant to be a resource, and especially with so many of the excellent sites no longer active, for instance a lot of the links from Better Buffy Fiction are no longer good.

I collected some GeoCities' links and Alternatives (haven't add the WaybackMachine links yet) @  cordykitten.livejournal.com/308627.html when the GeoCities Sites vanished. (Feel free to point me out to alternative links I've missed).  Maybe that helps to make some more WBM links.

This is why I started this links resource for The Way Back Machine - so many writers have taken down their sites or will soon do so - it can't be helped, it's natural for creative people to move forward to new projects and interests -

Does anyone know  status of the Writer's Guild?

Thankyou for the Kari Mouke link - she is a very popular Buffyverse writer that has moved on to other interests -  What a pity that her series will not be completed.

I know, it is a pity, she is a very gifted writer and her stories were all so original. I was lucky enough to save all of her work before it was taken off-line, unfortunately it is on a flash drive in my storage unit.
The only unfinished piece I can think of was Deviant Paths, which happens to be one of my favorites of her works.

For those looking for more Kari Mouke fic...here's another link:

http://web.archive.org/web/20051210030552/www.thetwojanes.com/KariFics.htm

This one has some of the stories not included on the other "Two Janes" page.  Fair warning, not all the stories have been archived w/ the Wayback Machine, so not all are available.  Also, the old bloodshedverse archive has a few Kari Mouke fics not listed on either of the links already provided by myself or LisFayte.  You can find those stories (& other KM fics you might be missing here:

http://web.archive.org/web/20060718194251/www.bringonthebloodshed.com/bloodshedverse/authors/kari_mouke.htm

Feb 21 2010 09:24 pm   #19nmcil
The big problem that I see with all the wonderful old sites is that the "computer vipers and ghost" take over the domain names - the "two janes"  links for a lot of the works are taken over by ad promotion companies - same for a lot of other sites.

How does the Way Back Machine work?  can visitors submit sites for the archives?

There's also this site, which indexes Buffy sites that are no longer online. I haven't tested out most of the links, but I know that it worked well for Sinister Attraction, back when the site was down, and some of the other sites work, too.

Even if the writers just put up a free website - any if they don't want to spend anytime  - this way they keep their doman name from being taken over by the ad promo companies.

Thank you for posting this other link - I have to  get myself over to an art opening right now - plus finish working on my Buffy comic project - but I will check out the site later -

Get to TWBM and get this link - one of the outstanding Spuffy writers of the past - very few of Ariane's works are still being archived - I love this writer - thank CDS and the classic fan fiction and writers for posting the link.  We had been trying to find where we could still read Ariane's work.

Tiny sample -

The opening of "Reality Bends to Desire"

At night, when the world is sleeping -- that is, when that part of the world which does not have evil and the destruction of goodness staining its soul is sleeping -- he roams the hallways of Wolfram and Hart, keeping his solitary watch. He isn’t really sure just who or what he is watching, but at least, he tells himself several times an hour, it’s better than burning in Hell.

Miranda's excellent site went offline several years ago, and like you, I mourned the loss of some excellent fiction.  Fortunately, Wayback has brought it back, though a chapter or two across the content is variable:

For some of the newer Buffyverse writers who may not be familiar with the early essays from the writers and fans - great to re-visit these.  Just a quick read of the answer to David Fury - particularly interesting post the Twilight Times and all the, IMHO, problems that Joss Whedon and Dark Horse have had with trying to repair the damage done to Angel who totally chose with his free will to follow Whistler.  Those two brought so much destruction on the planet and Angel totally abused his professed love and respect for Buffy with the path he chose.

You know, I think it's wonderful that Kari is so well-remembered and appreciated. However, as someone who for most of my life as a ff writer had to keep it very separate from my RL for work-related reasons, I'm entirely sympathetic to someone who has pulled all her stories down. If I remember correctly, Kari's reason was also work-related. She was going to work as an elementary school teacher if I'm remembering it right.  Anyway, whatever her reason for wanting them removed, I think we should honor it. Authors have different reasons for pulling things down: wanting to or becoming published authors of original fic who do not want their early attempts being viewed by new readers; having taken some of their fan fic stories and reworked them into something publishable - which they wouldn't be if there were a facisimle available for free on the web; to having taken a new job where being "outed" as a writer of fan fic (or, let's face it, vampire porn) could be an excuse for being fired, to just having improved so much to the point that they'd rather not have their early works out there.  Granted, there is never really anything that is actually gone from the web. But just because we CAN find something, doesn't mean we SHOULD. Just something for everyone to think about when you're trying really hard to find something the creator of it has taken great pains to hide.

I have a quick question, much in the spirit of this thread, if not quite the letter.

About a decade ago I remember reading--two or three times, at least--a fine BtVS site that had two finished novella arcs by its site owner/author, and an incomplete third. As I recall, there were the usual tribulations where Spike wasn't trusted by Buffy or the Scoobies, while Darla and Dracula schemed to bring back the Master. They actually got Heinrich Nest, at first; and in some fine plotting, Nest proved to be a vampire hunter who was casting a spell to destroy them all before a vampire (Darla, I think), drank him down, and the Master showed up. She also nearly killed Giles, at the end.

Does any of this sound familiar? I'm thinking that with the advent oif Wayback, I'd like to find it again, but that's impossible to do without knowing what I'm looking for.

Apr 30 2014 05:08 am   #46nmcil12
I think that if you can find a story with the WBM - that's fine - people don't use the WBM unless the really want to read the work.  Taking any works without the permission from the writer for distribution is absolutely not okay.   I don't think a writer, especially a very popular ff writer would take their work down without a good reason.

Lucky for all the Spuff and FF fans, there are some outstanding new writers active today  and there are the wonderful earlier writers, like slaymesoftly, who continue to produce outstanding works for their readers to enjoy.

Even after all these years, I still love to read Spuffy and to create graphics and art based on the Buffyverse.

A lot of people move on, but I think it's a shame when good work is lost to view. Just my opinion, mind. Some sites are gone now, and the WBM does us a service by making it available, again. If I could, I'd ask for permission from a given writer to read their work using the Machine, but often the addresses are gone.

Lucky for all the Spuff and FF fans, there are some outstanding new writers active today  and there are the wonderful earlier writers, like slaymesoftly, who continue to produce outstanding works for their readers to enjoy.

No question, there. I've just got an archivist's mind (or heart) set. When I read, or view, or hear something I really enjoy, I'd like it to be preserved for others to derive the same pleasure. :)
May 03 2014 06:06 am   #48nmcil12
That's the way I feel about the works of the early ff writer Ariane - if it were not for the WBM - those works would be lost to the newer fans of Buffy and the FF readers - I just keep hoping that when I go back to read her works - that they are still available with the WBM.

Here's Medea's Fanfiction, including her series, Masters and Minions. It's primarily Willow-centric, but gives starring roles as well to Spike and Angel:

WBM - Fanfiction by Lori - all links seem to be working order  - The series is listed as complete - this is recommended as a very good Spike with Giles series -

It SURE would be great if members would post some of their Good Active Working Links for The Way Back Machine - I've been trying out some of the links that were previously posted here and a lot of them no longer work.

This is a great resource for all the Spuffy readers and authors - it would be great if we could keep it going and updated.

Especially looking for Just Rewards and any of the other large archive sites - with the loss of Sinister-Attraction recently, it's just another reminder that so many of the earlier works continued to be lost.
Please Help update our list.

I'm not sure how the Wayback Machine works. If it has to have a working link, and the archive has closed, I don't know how it could provide anything useful? Does it go into some internet limbo and find things that no longer have a home?

I don't really know all the ins and outs - I read some of the technical info but frankly, it's all pretty much beyond me as I know zero about writing code.   All I know is that sometimes I can read with the link I use and other time Nothing.  For instance the Just Rewards site, I am pretty sure you were able to read stories there, now the last time I tried using it - nada.   I know that if one of those Domain Sellers can get the original domain name it effects what and how TWBM can access the original sites - Maybe one of our members who really knows how TWBM works could give us info on best way to get access to the early sites.  I keep coming across those "looking for a story" that sends people to Sinister Attraction but the site is no longer active.

Just the other night I ran across this link to Sinister Attraction looking to see if there was any updated info  - I've not tried the links, but ones I did a quick check on seem to work -

One of the nice members over at Spuffy Realm sent me a working link for Just Rewards - the link I tried worked so I am hoping most of them are in good working order.

Oh, that's great. I hope it works. It's hard to find whole sites once the owner has stopped paying for them and there are no mods.
