Spike came in second to Dracula, and Buffy came in second to Sarah Connor for top heroine. A surprising #1 for top mentor, though, beating out the likes of Dumbledore, Gandalf, and Obi-Wan Kenobi, is our very own Giles.
As for the vampires, Spike, Angel, and Dru were in the top 5, and Darla also made it to the top ten. So that's something.

Great that Giles won - Big Surprise considering the list of competitors - Joss Whedon was the Biggest creative success for the entire competition/poll - his characters came in super high in all the categories - lots of 2 and two came in top place. What I really liked about this poll is the variety of characters and the wide range in time periods - and my all time fav character next to Spike is Spock - how is that for rhyme & reason & conversions. These two characters, I just realized, are my perfect metaphor for what Spike represented in the series. Spike is all that passion and primal force that Spock has learned to control.
1. Dracula (picture of Christopher Lee) not sure if this includes the actor playing the role or generic Dracula Literature character.
2 Spike (Buffy The Vampire Slayer)
3 Angel (Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Angel)
4 John Mitchell (Being Human)
5 Drusilla (Buffy The Vampire Slayer)
6 Eric Northman (True Blood)
7 Mick St John (Moonlight)
8 Selene (Underworld)
9 Count Duckula (Count Duckula)
10 Darla (Buffy The Vampire Slayer)
11 Lestat de Lioncourt (Interview With The Vampire)
12 Jessica Hamby (True Blood)
13 David (The Lost Boys)
14 Edward Cullen (Twilight)
15 William Herrick (Being Human)
16 Blade (Blade)
17 Damon Salvatore (The Vampire Diaries)
18 Bill Compton (True Blood)
19 Jasper Hale (Twilight)
20 Stefan Salvatore (The Vampire Diaries)

Looks like lots of Whedon love in the responses.
I was happy to look at all the lists and the winners. Not just the "current" hot thing but even older sci/fi, horror, fantasy was represented. Even Robbie from Forbidden Planet made it with some serious votes in the robot category!
Now it's the "best of the best" and most Whedon fans are giving Giles a lot of support but my money is on the Doctor. If Spike had won over Drac that would be SUCH a different story!

Thanks for the post Kathleen, I had the impression that this was the final round - I will go over there and vote again -
To bad that Spike did not win but if Dracula winning, I'm fine with that. The character has been an icon in literature, film, theatre and pop culture - what other vampire character could actually compete with Dracula. While I love that Giles got the top place for mentors - I was very surprised. I voted for Spock, like Dracula he became a iconic character in film and television and a huge pop culture reference, plus I love the metaphor of Spock - great intellect and mind over the primal instincts that make men into such monsters and forces for destruction and chaos.
