Closing the old thread due to it's length.  You should still be able to access it to check things, but you won't be able to post.  Making this sticky so it (I hope) will hang around where it's visible all the time.

still trying to find the story that has a character that is a groundskeeper - I believe his name is Gable.  It's an ensemble work and Spike comes back as some type of avenging and protector force.  Great that I found "Wishes"  series but it was not this story.  I've tried searching on my own but have had no success.

The only fic that I remember with a grounds keeper named Gable is "The Rest of Our Lives" Series by Ariel Dawn.

Not sure if this is the right place for my question - my apology in advance if this request should not be here.

I'm really feeling the need to read some stories where Spike makes the decision to leave Buffy and try to find his own way - I've read that wonderful story where Spike meets the young vampire hunter Kat and they become lovers and they both end up in Sunnydale.  Buffy is with Angel as her lover in this one.

Have some of your favs - Spike goes away stories you can recommend - or if these exist on another thread can you please direct me to the thread.

Thanks loads.

I can never get the "search" to work for me when I try to use words in the summary.  Does that option work in the search?  I put in "spike leaves sunnydale" and I also tried "spike leaves buffy and sunnydale" but I keep getting a prompt that the page can not be found.  This always happens when I have tried to use the search this way.

Advice on how to use this option -

If you put "Spike leaves Sunnydale" into the first text box (asking for words to look for), and then go to the next box and use the dropdown menu to find "in summary" and click on that, then "search", a whole list of fics in which those words show up in the summary.  The menu gives you a lot of options "in the title" in the chapter title" in the summary, and so on.

I've tried several ways (tips in the ?) but I always get this response.  When I use the "category" search it works just fine but the "category" would not give me a specific theme of Spike leaving sunnydale.  Does it make any difference if I use IE or Firefox.   Response from search attempt in summary  This page can't be displayed

Okay - I went in (not as an admin, just in case) on Firefox and Safari and got a nice long list of fics both time.   This is all I did:

Looking for a story where Spike saves a little girl from a vampire. Unknown to him until later its Buffy`s kid. The girl adores Spike and everyone else is shocked to see him due to the fact they thought him and Angel had been killed. I remember Spike shows up last second at the airport in order to move closer to Buffy and the kid.

Question - Is there a way to list the stories from the old site - would those old links allow us to access them through the Way Back Machine if those stories are no longer listed in the current BSV?

Question - Is there a way to list the stories from the old site - would those old links allow us to access them through the Way Back Machine if those stories are no longer listed in the current BSV?

Absolutely no idea. To the best of my knowledge, everything was transferred over to the new site (I presume you're talking about the old House of Bloodshed? or the first BSV where the mods posted the fics rather than the authors?). However, since the authors themselves had to do most of it, I'm sure there were some who didn't bother.  I would guess, what with subsequent changes in ownership, hosting companies and servers, the answer is probably "no". Any listing would be long gone along with the site itself. But I really don't know.  Always_jbj may know, she helped transfer my stuff.

As SMS has said, it was up to the authors to move their own fics over when the BSV changed to self-posting, and some probably didn't bother, but the majority would have been moved. If there was a list of the fics that were on it at the time, I imagine the only person who had it would have been BSB, but I doubt she kept a list. The only thing I can suggest is try searching for the old BSV on the Wayback Machine and see what you get.

Looking for Spikes_Kat Lost in Time Series. Can find it here or any other sites. I know she started on the 2nd story: For Love of A Wolf. And I don't know she finished it or not. Hope someone has copy of the series.  Thanks.

And any more recommendations for time travel fics? Those are my faves. Thank you.

As far as I know, it's only available on the Wayback machine:  https://web.archive.org/web/20120228151315/http://spikeskat.rogue-poet.com/lostintime.htm

I have all 3 stories ('Lost in Time', 'A heart whose love is Innocent' and 'For Love of a Wolf:Alric's story' ) archived because I went through and copied them chapter by chapter and saved them each in a single document. I'm not sure whether Alric's story is finished, my copy does seem to just hang at the end of Ch25 with more plot to come and there's no handy 'The End' declared at the bottom...

If you can't access this or can't find the others, send me a message with your email address and I'll send them to you.

I'm looking for a fic that was up on Fonts of Wisdom--but the site is currently down, and may be closed.

In the fic, vampires aren't humans minus souls with demons, but demons who take the memories of the human forms they fill. Spike wishes to be what he was--and is instead made into a vampire who can go out in the sun. Buffy initially rejects him, until Halfrek (whom he previously beat up) returns with a vampire band who torture Spike...

It's actually a lot better than I've made it sound.

Any idea what it is, and where I might it, would be greatly appreciated. :)

I'm sorry to learn about Fonts of Wisdom - that was one of the sites where I started reading fanfiction - I sure hope it comes back.  Posted only last month that people should visit these earlier sites just to let the owners know that fans still read there.

I hope that I can find the story - it sounds like an interesting read - hope it's here.

Sorry to bug - tried finding with google and I get stories for a character - where can I find it?  Thanks for your help.

Sorry I forgot to post the link. It's on the old Fonts of Wisdom site, but I was able to access most of the links through Wayback:

https://web.archive.org/web/20110108091920/http://lubakmetyk.infinology.net/crypt.htm

I honestly didn't expect it to work, because so many other sites accessible via Wayback have their story links completely broken. But most of these work. Oddly, the only group I couldn't get to work were for a story (never finished) that I beta'd. :(

Thanks Ever for the link _ I sure am sorry to see that Fonts of Wisdom is no longer - I sure like reading there, it was one of the few sites where you could still read some of Ariane's works.  I tried to see if the cache would work but I was not able to get anything.   I wonder if the Slayer Network  that has made Sinister Attraction accessible could do the same for Fonts of Wisdom.

FoW was also one of my first fanfic websites, with a lot of excellent content. It's rather sad the way when a series ends, fanfiction about it drops away, and many sites close. And I don't mind saying, though I'm sure some others will disagree, that I frankly prefer the writing of some of the best I've read to the work done on the original series...! Just my opinion, mind. But I can think offhand of a good dozen BtVS fanfic authors who created content that for plotting, character writing, and logic, were better than many episodes. (And yes, I know scriptwriting is very different from short stories, novellas, and novels. But still.)

If my babble offends, I will "be shutting up, now."

Another early site that the owner has graciously kept online is Death Marked Love - it would be nice if some of those readers who visit the active current sites would read at some of these earlier sites - it would be a good message and recognition to those early site owners that FF readers still use the site.
Mar 28 2015 01:24 pm   #32slaymesoftly

In all fairness to the old site owners - websites aren't free. It's not really fair to expect people who have moved on to other fandoms or other phases in their lives to continue to spend time and money on  something they are no longer interested in or can no longer afford. It takes both time and money to run an archive - even one that is self-posting, and RL takes a toll on both those things as people get older and have other responsibilities in their lives.
ETA: But yes, by all means, if you go to an old site, leave a review or a comment somewhere so the site owner knows that people are still using it.

I'm looking for a fic in which it's discovered Xander is half-demon--with some kind of oracular powers--until Willow blasted him in her little visit to the Dark Side. Now, he's all demon, and Giles, who has been hiding the whole thing, gets to deal (along with the Scoobies) with the fallout. Plenty of angst. Good story, and I can't recall the title, author, or where I read it. Would appreciate any help.

EDIT: Found it: Liszbeth Marcs' Revelations:

Absolutely agree with you - a lot of fanfiction readers don't appreciate the time and money involved in running those archive sites - I was totally surprised when I found out what it cost to run some of the sites - running even a site like Buffytube gets into the guilty pleasures category.  It's a bit disheartening when I see the amount of viewers at some of the forums compared to my Buffytube fan site but I still keep it going as I still have such a great love and respect for the series.

Death Marked Love, I think has writers who are not other of the current active sites - one of the reason that I always like to visit the site - I support the fanfiction sites much as I am able - I appreciate all the efforts and money that it takes to keep them running.

So I will say a great big THANK YOU to the mods and owner of this site - I've been reading here for a lot of years now.

I hope that if this site is ever in jeopardy that the site owner would be willing to pass ownership onto the members so it could continue...  and I hope that if there's a financial need we would hear about it before the site ended up going away. I would be really upset if this site were to go away.

Well, the site has changed ownership once already, although it went from the originator to the person who helped set it up and wrote the code for it, so stayed in the family.  No idea if BSB would want to take it back if/when Dia wants to give it up.

I can 't imagine how ownership to the members would work - somebody has to be the primary owner who pays the hosting company and handles any technical issues that come up. No idea about finances, although I will admit to alternating between being annoyed at all the fund raising stuff on TSR and thinking, "if everybody who reads or posts here would just chip in $5 - 10 once a year, Pari wouldn't ever have to worry about it." So, I have mixed thoughts about how that might work. I wouldn't want to be bugging people about money, although supporting a site certainly wouldn't be a huge financial burden on anyone if they were will to do it.

But I think it's fair to say the site probably isn't going to last forever. It may not be shut down, but there might come a point where it is no longer actively being maintained. I dunno. I wouldn't worry about it, if I were you.

You may want to talk to the moderators at Twisting the Hellmouth.  The site not only survived being abruptly abandoned by the original owner, it is THRIVING.  There's a little box in one corner of the pages discreetly asking for donations and lots of us give a small amount on an annual basis and it seems to be enough because the site is solvent.  I think the arrangement is sound.  I think the important thing is to have enough mods that the work doesn't become so overwhelming for one person that they one day wake up and life has happened and they can't do it anymore.  Everyone of us has those kinds of life events.  Keeping something like this going is actual work. It doesn't take many to spread the work and those several people can handle thing if something catastrophic happens such as the illness or death of a site owner (god forbid) or even marriage and babies (a wonderful, but time consuming business).

If we plan for catastrophe, hopefully, it never comes, but there are provisions...  There are three sites I'd hate not to be able to go to.  TtH, BSV and Elysian Fields.  I go to a lot of other sites, but those three are where I spend more time than anywhere else.  I hate the pit, even though it's huge, maybe because it's huge.  AO3 is great, but it's so random that it's hard for their to be any sense of community.

I think the days when one person can or should be entirely responsible for a website are long gone.  That is especially true for those that have the lifework of dozens or hundreds of people (all of whom have  vested interest in keeping the site going and pretty much OWE the siteowner some kind of help, either in kind or in dollars.  Clearly, no site owner is going to charge for fanfic hosting, but those who can offer support really should.)  As a site grows and the bandwidth expands, the costs go up.

If there was a paypal link in the menu, I'd donate.  I would NEVER give any site my credit card, for obvious reasons.

I'd really be heartbroken if BSV goes away.  So many sites I loved are now gone and the amazing work of some people who really should be best selling authors is lost to us forever.

Well, as I said, there are no plans like that. Not that I'm aware of anyway. :) However, Dia has moved on to other things and is no longer here all the time, so I'm just assuming she will decide she's tired of it one day. As you've already seen, without her, we are pretty helpless to fix things that go wrong with the script. The upside of having a skilled programer set up and run your site is that you have a lot more flexibility than archives that depend on purchased software to run it. The downside is, it would difficult for us to take over from her because we are not programers and probably could not fix things as they break. Plus, there are only two us mods and I'm the only one who is always checking in.  And I have no desire to actually run the site entirely. I'm just trying to keep it functional and spam-free.

But, it's all academic at this point. The site is here. It continues to receive good submissions from time to time, and nothing has broken lately, so it's all good!

Perhaps it is time to put out a call for moderators (or just tech assistance) on the main page, specifically ones with technical skills.  That way you can start 'training up' on the finer points of the site before things go sideways and she's not around.  Nothing lasts forever, but having this site for a good long time really would make me extraodinarily happy and I'm sure i'm not the only one.  There are many people whose work is on this site.  I find it hard to believe that not one of those has some technical skills.

Every person who reads or posts to this site has a vested interest in keeping it online.  It shouldn't fall to just one or two people to carry the responsibility of keeping the lights on, the domain registered, the softway virus free, etc.

An emergency techie person doesn't even have to be around all the time...

Want to say a great big THANK YOU slaymesoftly for your work on the site - I would be happy to help but unfortunately I not zip about the technical aspects of running a site -  If there is something that I can do to help let me know.   I've been a big fan of this site for many years.

I appreciate all the suggestions for site help, but feel I need to point out that I am only a moderator (along with Always_jbj, who is also very busy with other things, and one other person who is a "silent" mod and also not around.). This is Dia's site. She originally set it up with Bloodshedbaby, wrote the script, and took it over from Bloodshedbaby years ago when BSB was no longer willing to spend the time and energy on it. It would not be my place, even if I was inclined to do so, to go looking for other mods or tech help without express permission from the site owner. Since I'm not a programmer, I have no idea if it would even be possible for someone else to take over the technical maintenance, and I would have absolutely no idea how to go about training someone who was.

The site will continue as is, unless or until Dia deems otherwise. I understand it is frustrating when there is a glitch that it doesn't get fixed right away, but that's just the way it is. I think the "silent mod" may have a few permissions that Always and I don't, but not enough to maintain the site. Even if she were inclined to, which I'm pretty sure she isn't. :)  I have to email Dia about something that has come up. Perhaps I can get her to put something in the News section indicating her plans (if any) for the site. If nothing else, she could aleviate worries about it's lifespan. :)

On the one hand, yes, I would hate to see the site shut down, just because it has been around and part of my life in one way or another for a long time, and because we have worked hard on making it a little bit special (in terms of not accepting any fics that would make your eyes bleed or your brain hurt). This hasn't always made us popular, but it has kept the quality of the site up as best we can without alienating readers or making ourselves groan.  To the best of my knowledge, it is the only archive that genuinely does try to maintain a minimal level of techinical quality in the fics posted. (Keep in mind, if I had my druthers, that wouldn't be so minimal....)

On the other, I have no desire to take over running it or to have more duties here than I already have.

Slaymesoftly, you do a consistently fine job moderating, here. (That's aside from your excellent fanfiction.) I think all of us who have been enjoying the site for some time--and I lurked quite a while--are aware of that. It's just not apparent to some, I suspect, that you don't have the tiered control to do everything you want, since it's not your site. That isn't very apparent, because you're a big presence, here.

And please don't stop that. It helps give this great site a human face. :)

Thank you for the kind words, Saggit.  I did actually get a prompt reply from Dia about the posting issue and she will be checking in when her internet is fixed, which she has been assured will be soon. She can't work on the site from her phone.  I've asked her to take a look at the forum entries and see if she wants to say something in reply. As you have realized, I do not have control over anything technical. My job is to review membership applications to keep spam bots out, remove any spam that sneaks in (which isn't happening often now, Dia has put more controls in place which seem to be working), review submissions from unvalidated or new authors and accept or reject them based on quality and how well they meet our criteria, (and to deal with the abuse from irate rejectees - lol) and to alert Dia when a bug crops up that she needs to deal with. That's about it. And since I'm the only mod here 90% of the  time, I suppose I have become the "face" of the BSV, but it was certainly never intended to be that way. I forget sometimes that the site has been around as long as it has, and that people new to it don't know the history or that it had other presences at one time and that some of those people still are part of the mod crew, just no longer as visible.

First off thanks for finding that last story for me. This one was a story where Spike was the one turned human except he was a baby. Nina quickly adopted him as her own and loved him but had a hard time getting Angel on board. I also remember Buffy gets turned into a statue by the Immortal and forced to watch everything over the years.

DON'T know if this is still used but does anyone have a link to

I've really wanted to read it the last few weeks and all the links I have to it go nowhere. Even on Wayback all I get is chapter 1 box but no actual story

Sorry, posted this in the wrong place originally!

I'm looking for a fic I read a while back (maybe two years ago or so). Buffy is a slayer more like Kendra was. She had a female watcher who's killed. She was never allowed to talk to boys or wear makeup. Spike helps her out after her watcher dies (can't remember why though bc I'm pretty sure he was souless and didn't know her). They find out online that she was kidnapped by her watcher at a wedding and her parents have been looking her for her her whole life. That's basically all I remember. Hope someone can help!

I'm hoping you guys can help me find a fic that I don't know the name of, who wrote it, or what site I originally read it on. I only recall what the story was about, so hopefully it will jog someone's memory. :-)

The Powers bring Buffy and Spike's daughter from the future back into the past. It takes place during season six as Joyce is dead, Buffy has already been brought back and is sleeping with Spike, and if I recall right Giles hasn't left again. Their daughter doesn't tell them right away that she's their daughter. She's a tough girl that doesn't seem to like anyone but Dawn and Spike, though I don't think she'd ever met Tara or Anya in her future. She's tasked with seeing if humanity is worth saving. Her eyes swirl to different colors depending on her mood. She originally shows up with a portal dropping her in Buffy's living room on the coffee table while a Scooby meeting just happens to be taking place. There is an enemy in the future that is attempting to come back to destroy Buffy and her daughter needs to gather a weapon in order to defeat him. The weapon just happens to be Spike, but she doesn't tell them that until near the end of the story. There are three things she needs to see to determine on if humanity is worth saving and I only recall Spike's - his was to have some self-respect, which he manages when Xander and the rest of the gang freak a bit over how he demolishes the enemies demons on their first attempt to attack the group. I think, but can't guarantee, that the other two things was for the gang to accept Spike, and for Buffy to realize her feelings.

A few other notable things. Their daughter was on the run with Spike since she was born as the Scooby gang, and Giles/Buffy, thought the baby was evil. Dawn helps Spike for awhile and then I don't recall what happened to her. Spike is killed while his daughter is hiding beneath the floor boards of their apartment when she is around 16, I think. She smokes and puts her cigs out on her arm. When she arrives back in the past in Sunnydale she stays at Spike's crypt and this makes Buffy insanely jealous as she thinks they are having sex as they get closer, not realizing that her daughter has told Spike the truth about who she is.

Anyways, I hope that's enough information and somebody can point me in the direction of the story as I'd really like to have a copy of it.

I'm looking for a (relatively) older piece of fanfic whose name was something rather like, "Yellow is Lonely Without Stripe." It focused on relationships and action, and had witty chapter subheadings which were presented as if relaying a traffic collision in some unnamed major city.

Strike a memory chord with anybody out there? I'm coming up with nothing searching the Web, but then, as much fanfic seems to get quietly taken down as gets put up when a popular series ends. I'd appreciate any help on this one.

And that is a damn fine story. Really tightly constructed, with believable secondary characters, good atmosphere, a great plot and main character voicings.

I'm looking for a fic that I want to reread (that believe was on ffn), that's a season 1 au where Buffy staked Angel during their first encounter in the alley, and Spike saw it. Spike then decided to train Buffy to be a really formidable Slayer, and they fell in love, but the PTB brought Angel back and tried to force him and Buffy back together, but Spike and Buffy managed to convince them not to; that they were a better couple than Angel and Buffy would be. I'd really appreciate any help!

Anyone have some suggestions for stories that have Spike not be the Sunnydale Pauper but with money - a wealthy Spike.  Not the great Spike's Will Be Done series - I've read that a couple of times.  Would appreciate any suggestions you can offer.

I can remember reading some many years ago.  (My Just a Little Spell has Spike owning a big apartment building, so he's semi-rich at least) And I have some where it's alluded to (by Angel one time) that he has money and just steals things or charges the Scoobies for things because he likes to, not because he needs to. :) I think it's a fairly common trope, just can't think of the titles of the one(s) I read so many years ago.

Thanks for trying - I know there are some excellent ones with wealthy Spike I just can't figure out how to do a search that is useful for this story element.  I'm just having a yen for Spike not as pauper vamp right now.  I'll try out your Just a Little Spell.

I'm looking for a fic--probably only on Wayback, now--that featured a resouled, dechipped Spike and revitalized, magic-casting Giles in London, eventually successful in wooing Buffy and Anya respectively. They deal with dangers largely resulting from ancient gods that live beneath the Thames trying to reclaim London. Title was something like "Going Underground." Thanks. :)

Yeah, it was pretty good, aside from the don't-touch-me-I'm-fragile depiction fo Wesley. Very well plotted, excellent character voicing, anid background locations showing knowledge that brought them to life. (Contrast that with so many Cleveland hellmouth stories that are absolutely generic. And for what it's worth, I speak as somone who lives in the Cleveland metroplex.

Hope someone can provide us both a link. :)

LOL I've got to admit I'm guilty of making Cleveland a pretty generic place. Just know little or nothing about it. (I think my mother had cousins there. We may have visited them once. All I remember about it they had a baseball game on the radio or tv.  And I know it's on Lake Erie. That's pretty much it. :)

If you or anybody else wants to quiz me for some useful or color-adding details in or around Cleveland, let me know. Just my opinion, but I usually read up on a place before writing something in it--not that I have much time for fiction writing, unfortunately. :(

But for example, of all the places I've lived in or visited, Cleveland appears to have the most churches. Hell, I've literally counted 5 within two blocks near the downtown area. And the city has a huge popular of Hungarian descendants. In fact, it said to have the largest group of Hungarians outside the nation, itself. Hungarian names are everywhere: Dorati's Autos, Vegh's Golf Pro. And a local church--Hungarian Lutheran, started by German merchants who emigrated to Hungary--runs an event once a month serving up chicken paprikash and stuffed cabbage. A little of the culture remains, mostly with the old folk. But the pride's there. (Disclaimer: I'm not Hungarian. I'm just fascinated by people. Both in general and specific.)

Is this the one where CoW actually makes Giles & Spike work together and the carot for Spike, if I recall correctly, is that the CoW will take the "no troubles and dusting" for Spike if he agrees?  Spike and Giles are a terrific team.  It's been a very long time since I read this - Anya also gets a very good treatment in the story.

I think it may be that. Spike first goes on a spirit quest (which involves getting a soul and losing his chip), then helps Giles derail a demon in the Underground which is attacking Travis and a minion of his. Each succesive adventure builds nicely on filling in the details about the overarching plot, which has to do with an older deity seeking to raise the Thames back to its flood stage of many centuries past--abetted by WR&H.

Giles in this one is a sort of Giles/Ripper mix, a fair mage, up for a spot of trouble, in love with Anya, and busking with Spike. :D Soul-having Spike is a bit more mature and law-abiding, though still very impulsive, and the two easily become good friends--though they'd quickly deny it if pressed.

I'll probably need to search some of the dead-but-still-visible sites and see if I can sift out an email address.

EDIT: Found it! The site is London Calling:

You guys were so helpful last time I'm hoping your great minds will be able to help me again. There is little I recall about this fic I'm looking for but hopefully enough of it to trigger a memory.

Wistler takes both the Scoobies and the Fang Gang and puts them in a type of bubble universe. In that AU they are human, or think they are, and once able to talk to them without the FE noticing, he gathers them all at the Crawford Mansion. Most of them think they are in High School and going to a Halloween Haunted House. He pulls the whole group aside and tells them what is going on and that 2 of them need to leave the bubble universe and deal with the FE. Angel is one to go and I think maybe Faith or Willow is the other??? Many years pass and eventually those in the bubble universe are alerted via a passcode to their real memories now that the FE has been defeated.

By this point Buffy and Spike have been married for years and have kids together.

Does anyone recall the name of the fic or where it can be found???

Thanks Ginar! That's the one. I should've known it was by Maryperk. :)

I'm looking for a relatively short piece that has Dru and Buffy meeting in an alley--in LA, I think, after Angel decides to kill all his friends and foes (so to speak). Wistful piece, as I recall. Dru must have been on lithium during the making of the fic, but I really liked it.

Add my "thanks" Ginar the Persons in Mirror sounds like it will be a very good story - going over to read now.

THANK YOU TONS - I love this series and the Longdon Calling Site - hope all the links are in good working status.  Plus you get the other writers - and it looks like all the links work.  The other stories that I liked very much and would like to read again are the works from Lesley in the Three Lions Series.

Great! Like you, I also thought the Three Lions series was fantastic. A shame so much (but not quite all) up there hasn't been re-up'd elsewhere, but that's often the case with so much excellent fanfic, isn't it?

I'm looking for a fic where Spike had a spell placed on his crypt that kept humans out. When he's injured, Buffy has an epiphany of what it must have been like for him to be kept on the outside.
