Where and how do you find fic?

Oct 21 2006 06:35 pm   #1slaymesoftly

You can be as general or specific as you would like, but tell us how you find the stories you want to read.  I'll remember to go first this time. :)

Now that I'm an "old hand" at BtVS fan fic, I usually stick to authors I like and the sites where I know I can find them.  I have friended a bunch of people on LJ specifically so that I can keep up with their fic postings - and that has broadened my horizons quite a bit.  In the beginning I spent months at All About Spike (because Laura would not put up any crap) and then I branched out to other archives that I found by googling "Spike" and "BtVS" AAS is the only site about which I would be specific (Well, and this one, obviously!)  I've worked my way through AAS, so rarely go there anymore and I only visit other archives once in a while.
As a rule, if I'm looking for new fic, I will scroll through the nominies at award sites for fics/authors I haven't read and I often discover new authors that way. I will also check out fics/authors that have been recommended by people I know and whose taste I admire.

awards sites are great and lately i find myself depending a lot on recs from friends. if nothing else, i'll google spuffy fanfic and see where it leads me. just the other night i found Barb C's site. i had never read A Raising in the Sun or any of the sequels, drabbles, and ficlets, so i spent several days wallowing in Barb-fic. i highly rec the entire series. two thumbs (and in James' case a middle finger LOL) wayyyyy up!!

I'm gradually reading my way through everything on this site, to begin with...lol...because i've rarely found anything here that wasn't quality writing...awards sites are also very helpful...and if i'm in the mood to read something specific, i'll use google to find it...

OK, like so many I started out at ff.net.  from most fandoms the site has pretty good fic, but most of the Buffy stuff?  Not so much,  but I did find Euridice whose fic I love.  From there on her info page I found The Crypt which was my first favorite Spuffy site.  Some of the stuff is kind of weak but most of it is pretty good.

A good point, that may be gleaned from the pup's post, is that any authors or fics that have been recommended by someone who is a good author in his or her own right,  are probably going to be very good also.

I need to do something about this icon, don't I?

I started out with All About Spike, too... from there I followed links to the authors I enjoyed the most, and then links from their sites after I had finished devouring them. One link led to another, led to the HoB and from there to the newly-fledged BSV.

Now days I mostly stick to authors I know I enjoy, the fics on Good__Evil, fics I read for judging, and recommendations from people whose judgement I trust. I also like to check out new authors when I have the time.

ROFL  thank you, Tam!  I'm going to get off my lazy ass and put a couple of lj icons on photobucket so I can have something that isn't a squished banner.

Sorry, Wulfie.  That was a typo - "this" not "his"  :P

I started reading fanfiction in the X-Men universe, a lot of which I found by doing web searches, so I did the same with Buffy fanfic.  I, too, read a lot on ff.net, but I wanted more quality than what I found there.  I remember that I discovered AllAboutSpike because I was stalking the web for updates on a story I was reading at ff.net, called "Journeys" by an author named Mary.  Maybe some of you have heard of it? :-d  It's only the best Spuffy story ever written, IMHO...

I also remember finding Mandi's site Vampires Kiss through a web search, and I'm pretty sure I read through that archive for a solid month or two.  Beyond that, I usually end up finding a particular author that I really, really like and remain devoted to their websites/ljs.  That's why it's always cool to find great sites like the BSV that get updated often with lots of new stories/authors, because I'm always on the lookout for new favorites.

One avenue that I haven't taken much advantage of, that I really probably should, is reading nominees at awards sites.  I judged for the LSA awards once and ended up reading a lot of amazing stories that I'd never even seen before (and giving myself eyestrain in the process) and it was a very pleasant surprise.

LOL...Yep, judging can definitely lead to eyestrain...and the discovery of fabulous stories and authors!

I started reading Vampire Chronicles fan fiction and moved on to Highlander fan fiction through the VC fan fiction authors I liked. I then followed those Highlander authors to Buffy. Seems to look like I stalk certain authors. ;)

I also use fan fiction mailing list. A lot of them post stories with links to their sites. I know Enigmaticblue does this on a list that I'm on. I went to her site and then found The Crypt from her links page.

I still use fanfic.net to find fan fiction. One author that I love post there and at The Crypt. She unfortunatley does not have her own site.

"lol,  I found the Crypt one Friday afternoon and started reading, got so into it that I didn't notice what time it was till the wife come in Saturday morning and asked me to go get us some breakfast.  I was still reading :P"

I have never done that! ::hears snickering:: O.k so I didn't believe that either. There were times when I'd get so into a story I wouldn't realize how late it was. I'd look out the window and the sun would be coming up. I live in Alberta. During parts of the winter the sun goes down at around 4:30pm and comes up at 8:30am. Luckily my husband understands my obsession. He loves video games. =)

Wulfie - you're right.  That picture sucks.

I stumbled on All About Spike and mainlined for months.  I started at A and guzzled till Z.  I wasn't writing myself then, so there was nothing in the way of feeding my habit.  Sadly, AAS is no longer a living site.  It's part of the Web Undead.

Then, I found Vampire's Kiss, which eventually led me to the Mother Load on BSV.  It's great writing and reading hear, where nobody ever says that nasty word "Publish."

Believe it or not, I started reading fanfiction with Silk Stalkings, and then moved into Harry Potter, (shush, don't laugh), until I found Saber's site.  I ended up reading everything on her site, then found Dancing Lessons and another author's site and from there dove into All About Spike.  Like others, I read from top to bottom, and everything in between.

By then, I'd run through almost everything twice, and was looking for more, so I kept googling until I found it.    And always in the back of my mind was one of the first fics I'd ever read. . . . and well, it sort of pissed me off, and between that and being stuck home with nothing to do, I started writing.  And now here I am.

I remember silk stalkings, the dude is now on csi miami. well i had no idea about fanfic and one day I went over to googling. I was looking for something for my sims and I typed in "Buffy" and found Saber's link. Sat there for three days and read all the Spuffy fics. I was hooked, found BSC and the rest is history. I normally do everything that everyone else said. Click links, follow award sites and read from LJ friends.
