Summary:   Set in season six of Buffy, this is my little idea of a happier ‘could have been’ moment between Buffy and Spike.

Spike dreams, or does he?

Good Dreams

The moon had risen, bathing the beach in its ethereal light.   Giving the ocean a path that went on forever, making you wish you could walk upon it to see where it would lead. Perhaps to somewhere as beautiful as heaven is supposed to be.

Spike was brought out of his thoughts by a Goddess rising from the water, following the path laid down by the moon.  Her hair was almost silver in colour, her face perfection, her shoulders and arms well rounded with muscle, her stomach flat, and hips narrow, leading to long, lithe legs.  She ran towards Spike with a smile on her face that lit up the night, her laughter ringing out.  It was the sweetest sound Spike had ever heard.

The moon’s light cast her in silver shadows blurring her features as she stopped about three feet away from him.  Spike was entranced; he didn’t think he had ever seen anyone more beautiful.  She held out her arms to him.

"Come with me, Spike.  Come with me and I will give you what you need."  And with that she turned and ran away from him along the beach.  Spike didn’t hesitate, he ran after her.

He couldn’t catch her.  Even with his vampiric speed she stayed at a steady pace, fifty yards in front of him.  All of a sudden Willow was standing in front of him.  He changed course to go around her, but she stayed in front of him.  He stopped, realising that there was a row of Willows in front of him, blocking his way.  He growled and was about to try jumping over them when she spoke.

"Spike, you cannot follow Buffy."

His jaw dropped.  The woman he was following was Buffy?!  This knowledge made him even more determined to get past Willow. He ran forward at full tilt, ready to push past her; but he slammed up against an invisible barrier.  Willow smiled sadly at him.

"If you follow where she leads, you will only find pain.  Find a different way to where she leads."

Then she winked at him, and disappeared.  Spike started running again; Buffy was still at the same distance in front of him.  He thought about what Willow had said and realised that Buffy was heading to the car park.  Following Willow’s advice, he veered off towards the car park a different way.

When he arrived, Buffy was already there, sitting on the hood of his Desoto.  She smiled and held out her arms to him again, and Spike walked into her warm embrace.  She held his head in her arms.  When he looked up at her, he saw passion in her eyes, but there was something else in them that he couldn’t quite…  She kissed him and all thoughts went out of Spikes head.  There was none of the violence that he was so used to in this kiss. She pulled back. Spike kept his eyes closed and held an un-necessary breath, waiting for the punch in the nose from her; but nothing happened. He opened his eyes and saw that Buffy was smiling at him still.

"I’m going to give you what you need, Spike, not what you expect."

"And just what is it you think I need luv?" he asked, stroking the side of her face and tucking some stray hairs behind her ear.

She leaned into his touch and turning her head slightly, kissed his palm. Her tongue snaked out and traced his life-line sending fire up his arm and spreading throughout his whole body.  They kissed again, with more intensity.  His arms went about her waist, bringing her off the hood of the car so that they were standing.  He held her tightly to him, feeling her whole body pressed the length of him.  To his surprise, she held him just as tightly.  The whole world fell away as the kiss deepened.

When he pulled back to allow her to take a breath, they were no longer at the beach.  They were in her bedroom, standing at the end of her bed.

"What the hell?" Spike said in surprise.

"No questions."  Buffy said quietly.  She slipped her hands under his duster and slid it off, throwing it over the chair.  He looked down at her, and she could see in his blue eyes, the questions that he needed answered.

"No questions just now." she repeated, pulling him down onto the bed beside her.  She kissed him again, his lips, his nose, his eyes, the scar in his eyebrow.  Spike felt himself drifting from all conscious thought as his senses reeled from Buffy’s kisses.  He started kissing her back; mirroring her movements from before.  When her arms slid under his t-shirt, he moved back allowing her to remove it.  She pushed him onto his back. Almost before the shirt was completely off, her nails were digging into his shoulders and her tongue travelling down his chest.  Her teeth grazed his nipple causing him to gasp slightly, which made Buffy laugh huskily and bite down a bit harder.

‘So, this is the game we want to play?’  Spike thought to himself.

He grabbed Buffy’s shoulders, pulling her into a kiss and reversing their positions, so that she was pinned under him. He started kissing and nibbling her ear, moving down her neck and along her collarbone.  All the noises she was making to his ministrations made him wonder about his self-control.  When he reached her breasts, he knew she was lost.  Her fingernails were raking across his shoulders leaving deep lines, some were starting to bleed; but neither of them cared.  Spike moved lower, pinning her legs while he moved to her centre.  He could smell how aroused she was, feel her warmth surrounding him and when he slipped his tongue between her lips, he was lost as well; lost in the taste and the burning heat of his Slayer.  He could hear her breathing speed-up, could feel her muscles tensing around his fingers.  She screamed his name when he brought her to climax.

He moved back up to lie beside her, taking his jeans off at the same time.  Buffy lay there, getting her breath back, her face flushed.  She turned to him and gave him a gentle kiss, before pushing him onto his back once again.  She began returning the favour.  Only this time, Spike pulled back before he climaxed.  He grabbed Buffy to him, pushed her onto her back and slid into her till he filled her completely.

Buffy gave a contented sigh when she felt him fully seated inside her.  This is what she wanted.  Spike in her, in her life, in every way she can get him.  This is what she wanted to give him; herself and all that she has to give him, heart, body and soul.  Spike started his rhythm, his head buried in her neck, nibbling, kissing, sucking, and all the while murmuring in her ear.  Buffy normally tried not to listen to his whispering, but this time she found herself paying attention.  He loved her. All the nonsense syllables and phrases all added up to one thing.  He loved her.  Just as they both started to reach the point of no return, Buffy took Spike’s head in her small hands and gave him what he needed.

"Spike, I Love You."

They cried out together as that pushed them both over the edge.  Spike’s blue eyes were almost black with passion still, and Buffy found herself drowning in their depths.  She repeated what she said, so that he wouldn’t have to ask her, or wonder if it was only said because of their lovemaking.

"I love you!"

The smile on Spike’s face was answer enough for Buffy, and she drifted off to sleep, wrapped around the man who would never leave her.

Spike couldn’t believe his ears.  He had died and someone up there had balls’d things up and sent him to Heaven instead of Hell.  She loved him.  She had said the words, twice! But more than that, the look in her eyes had matched what he was hearing and feeling from her.  He pulled her tighter to him and fell asleep. They both had a smile on their face.

Spike woke slowly from his dream, savouring the lasting feelings that were flooding his body.  ‘If only’, he thought.  That was when he became aware of the warmth he was feeling.  He looked down at his side, and there was the Goddess from his dream: his Buffy.  Lying as close to him as a person can get without slipping inside their skin.  She had a smile on her face.  Spike thought about his dream.

"I love you, Buffy."

She smiled a little more and tightened her arms around him.

"I love you too."

‘She was right,’ Spike thought, ‘it is what I needed.’

He kissed her hair and drifted back to sleep, smiling, knowing that she wasn’t going to run again.
