Boyfriend Material

Mar 18 2007 05:54 am   #1Scarlet Ibis

I saw a thread on the buffy section of tv.com, and someone asked who was Buffy's best boyfriend.  My god, I had to stop reading, because if they weren't praising Angel, they were rooting for Riley.  Resisting the urge to vomit (mostly from the Riley praise) and the not so good feelings from the Spike bashing (and I think someone mentioned Ben?!), I thought of all the guys from both series, who would you choose?  And sorry ladies, I'm going to have to exclude Spike in the running, cause otherwise, this would be damn boring (though in a good <3 Spike way).

I'd pick (evolved) Wesley.  He's intelligent, a fighter, not uptight about winding down or sharing a drink, the five o'clock shadow and he's open minded. Oh and duh, the accent. Probably some other stuff, but I'm getting sleepy.

I agree with you completely...if I had to pick one guy from the show (not Spike) it would have to be Wesley...and all the reasons I think so are...well...pretty much all the things he has in common with Spike :P lol

Hey...I think you may start to see a pattern here... :P lol

Well I agree with you two, Wesley is the man. But I could also go for Gunn as well.

Wesley is definitely going to be a popular pick. But just to be different I'm going to pick Oz.  :P

Huh, so if Buffy can't have Spike, who should she have? Well as we all know, Buffy has to have some monster in her man, so I pick Clem, you know they had some major chemistry going on in season seven, and he is far above Angel :D For myself, I would pick either Wesley or Giles (you know he was hot when he sang)

Yup, I agree...after Spike, Wesley (preferably scruffy!Wesley) and then Giles would be my picks.

For Buffy? I can't see her with any of the other guys from the show. Just Spike...or Spike and Faith *evil grin*

Omg, omg! I'm picturing her with Lorne! lmao

But Lorne would be perfect! He could help Buffy accessorize and then later commiserate with her over ruined shoes.

DoS, you were so right.  Okay, Wesley's off the table too ;)

GB, I agree, I'd go for Gunn if I couldn't have the first two.

LadyYashka- Oz is in a band and plays guitar (or was it bass), which is good, but... He's too short for me (at nearly 5'11" here).  Angel would come in at number four.

LisFayte- Clem?! Well... gosh. Dunno what to say bout that.  I'd say Webs, if she hadn't dusted him.  Yes, Giles had his hot moments- as Ripper, he was kinda Spike-ish...

Always_jbj- Yup, I'd see Giles.  Although, sometimes he was too uptight.  I'm not sure I could see a real relationship Spike and Faith- it has potential, but let's face it, Spike's kinda sensitive sometimes.  If he fell in love with her, then it'd be bad.  She'd have to fall for him first, and I don't know the probablity of it turning out that way.  Personally, I see "scruffy" Wes taming her better than Spike.

EAS- Lorne, lol.  He's... colorful, that's for sure ;)

ROFL - well, no question about Wes, is there?  I can totally see that. IMHO Giles would be the logical choice of any adult woman, but because of the long-standing relationship between the two, I find it a bit too squicky to go for it.  If we're being serious and ruling out Lorne and Clem, I think - in the guaranteed, never-coming-back absence of Spike - that I would see her settling into something with Angel.  I think she does need a bit of monster in her man, and he would be all that would be left for her.  They'd have to do something about anchoring that wishy-washy soul, though....

If she did settle down with Angel then the whole of season five couldn't have happened. I don't think she could digest him going to work for an evil law firm no matter how good of a spin he put on it. I still don't see her settling for him because their love was all star cross-y. With maturity most of the time comes knowledge and yes Buffy needs some monster in her man, I see her finding another vamp or even some other type of demon and settling down. But no humans.

I don't see Angel either- they didn't see the other for who they really were.  It was a disillusioned relationship.  However, if Angel could accept her for who she really was, and vice versa, then maybe.  Also, if Angel took the blinders off, then I think he could have been with her intimately without losing his soul.  When he lost his soul, he thought her to be perfection- this virgin, Champion of Goodness, a Slayer no less, loving him, and giving herself to him was like, the ultimate forgiveness for him, which equals "a big happy."

Anywho, as for no humans, I'd have to agree.  Except for maybe Xander- grown up adult Xander that's post s7.  They've been through everything, and can see the other for who they really are, so I think that has its possiblities.  He gets its about the mission, and isn't afraid to check her when she's potentially wrong, and he believes in her.  And Xander has his good points- I could accept that pairing (post s7 style).  Eww, way better than the smelly old Immortal...

I don't see Angel right away - but well-post NFA, with time to reestablish a relationship...He'd have to get over himself in a big way - accept her relationship with Spike, etc.  But, given the premise that Joss gave us - that she still has feelings for him - I think it might work.  Maybe not, but I think she'd have to try it before she would be ready to settle for anyone else.  And, I do think she would be settling.  Sort of a - 'well, Spike's gone, so it doesn't matter much what I do, or who I marry'...Oops! I already wrote that, didn't I?  LOL  Apparently, that's how I see it.  Sometimes, anyway.

Scarlet Ibis: LOL...that was Spike and Faith for Buffy (I have a not so secret love of S/B/F fics--I think the 3 of them balance each other out well). Although for a Spike/Faith fic where their relationship works and works well, try AmyB's All the Sinners Saints series.

Wes and Giles were for me *grin*

RandiGilesI just don't see Wesley as the guy for her...even when he's naughty..Has everyone forgotten the salty goodness that is "Gru" the Grusolog ladies and gents would have our fair Buffy drooling over his manlyness until his chivalrous behavior drives her to kick his tight hinny, but then they would both enjoy the fight....and so the vicious circle begins.
Mar 18 2007 11:17 pm   #18Scarlet Ibis

Gru?!  Eww! He was so... boring.  Almost as bad as Riley as far as his boringness.  Oh, and originally, this post wasn't about who was good for Buffy, but who would you choose....

What about Robin Wood?  They really seemed to have some chemistry going there for a while, and he certainly does seem to have a dark side.  Otherwise I'd have to admit that Wes would be my choice as well, but Buffy never showed any romantic interest in him at all.

Course she could go for Connor... Now those two are made for each other - both immature and selfish with super powers!  What a combination.

With the added bonus that it would drive Angel absolutely crazy. :-D

I can't really see Buffy with any of the guys on the show. Well, that's not true - I can see her trying again with Angel, but I don't see it being good or what she really wants, more out of familiarity and sentimentality for "first love" than anything else. But I don't think Buffy would be right with anyone else besides Spike. I could maybe see Scarlet's post-season 7 Xander, but the Wesley thing? I don't think she'd ever get over the first poncy impression he made on her. And I don't see Robin Wood working out. He's totally got a Slayer complex, and I can see him becoming another Riley when he's not as strong as Buffy.

And as for me... if I can't have Spike, I'd be all over Oz. I don't care if he's short. I have a thing for musicians.

Robin evolving into Riley?  No... never.  I wouldn't choose him, but I wouldn't put him so low on the totem pole as Riley.  I think he has a vengeance streak, but he isn't concerned about who's stronger or not.  He handled Faith brushing him off brilliantly- he isn't the type of guy who'll just stand there and take your crap, and I respect him for that.  He'd probably tell Buffy, "You may be stronger, but I still look better than you do."  Ha, ha!

Ditto.

I think that Buffy needs someone who has qualities that she lacks - some one who is emotionally and morally stronger than she is, who has the strength to call her on it when she is wrong.  Season 6 Spike just let her walk all over him - Robin never would have stood still for it, would have tried to put her head on straight for her or just walked away.  Season 7 Spike wouldn't take it either.  It has nothing to do with physical strength (although it probably doesn't hurt).

I can't see her with Xander outside of you're my brother, period. For me they could never cross that line. I could see Xander and Willow some time down the line maybe finally trying it out to see if it would really work.

As far as Buffy hooking up with someone with qualities that she doesn't have, that makrs Angel off the list, ROFL. Conner is just a bit EWWWW. Though I would feel sorry for the world if they did hook up.And not just from Angel's reaction. Robin I could see happing as well.

For Buffy, I'm a fan of her/Connor, or her/Wesley, though I agree it would take something big to change her impression of him. Personally, after Spike I think I'd go for Graham - good fighter, comparatively moral for a commando, reasonably attractive, and doesn't have Buffy as an ex (coz really, who'd wanna compete with her?)

Mar 30 2007 04:58 pm   #28lostboy

You're gonna think I'm bonkers, but I'd choose Adam (s4 Big Bad).  I just think it would be interesting, considering they were both victims of the Initiative.  I think Buffy is really good at seeing the humanity in monsters, and needs to believe she can salvage it.

I know the character wasn't really developed enough, but somehow I could see an AU where that could happen.  Plus, hey, the dude had rocket hands and crazy junk like that.  The kink possibilities are endless!

Dead Man, I think someone would write it, but because it might make them vomit chapter after chapter, well, they probably won't. Wasn't the atrocity of Connor and Cordelia enough?  He saw them in bed together- we were all punished that day...

Ewww - Cuffy - Ick Ick Ick.  You're so right Scarlet - Cordelia and Connor was enough to make anybody spew.

Gru- he was really cute and so blazing sincere, but that would wear thin mighty quick.  Nope, Wesley's the man.  Mmm - Wesley having phone sex with Lilah.

If we want her to be exactly she'll never be exactly I know the only really real Buffy is really Buffy and she's gone' who?
Apr 15 2007 06:29 am   #36Scarlet Ibis

Lol, Spikez_tart- although, Gru makes me want to heave.  IMO, he's neck and neck with Riley.  They have "boring as hell" stamped on their foreheads.  But Wesley... damn.  But he still wouldn't make sense with Buffy.  I think... if I think really hard about it, I could almost see Gunn- they'd be "Bunn."  He's a fighter, and Buffy wouldn't be so smart that he'd feel a tad bit inferior, and he wouldn't treat Buffy like a fragile piece of glass or a little girl, and I think she'd find relief in that.  Plus, he wouldn't be all needy and trying to prove himself like Riley... Yes, I could see Gunn working.

Gru is way better than Riley. It's not that he'd be boring, he was just uneducated compared to our world....and he was a lot more perceptive than people gave him credit for, as he knew that Cordy's heart really was with Angel. Cordy seemed to approve of his talents, though....so there wouldn't be that lack of satisfaction problem like with Riley. I doubt Gru's afraid to experiment. ;)

Apr 15 2007 06:14 pm   #38Spikez_tart

Gunn is possible except when he's trying to get a law school degree on the cheap.  Once he had his brain upgrade, he might find Buffy getting on his nerves.

Gru is still hot in my book.

If we want her to be exactly she'll never be exactly I know the only really real Buffy is really Buffy and she's gone' who?
Apr 18 2007 04:56 am   #39ZoeGrace

Okay, not necessarily "boyfriend" material obviously.  But if we're talking who I'd pair Buffy with if she can't have Spike?

Angelus. (not Angel)

I never saw him as really "that bad" when it came to women he had a thing for.  He was practially a pussycat with Darla.  And fairly indulgent of Dru despite her annoyance factor.  So I'm not buying that he would be less with Buffy, even if she was the slayer, and even if she was "good."

Apr 18 2007 05:42 am   #40Scarlet Ibis

All good points, Zoe.  However, Angelus was a bit insane after being trapped under that soul for so long.  That, and he hated the fact that Buffy made him feel love for some reason.  It was obvious he cared about Darla, as you said, but he hated Buffy for bringing out those feelings in his souled form.  Or maybe he was just looking for a reason- needing to prove himself as evil since he hadn't been able to for so long... Repression is a bitch.
